In his Saturday remarks during his campaign train ride, President-elect Barack Obama issued some soaring rhetoric about the state of the country today. At least the Old Media thought it was soaring rhetoric, anyway. Typically, the media was overawed by his mellifluous tones, of course. But during these remarks in Baltimore Obama made a startling suggestion. He said we need a "new Declaration of Independence."
Apparently the original one isn't good enough for the new president, but it also seems a silly rhetorical flourish. After all, what is it that we are declaring independence from this time? Recall that the original one was a declaration of separation from an oppressive monarchy, one that led to a seven-year-long war. Are we in such dire straits now?
And, needless to say, it is also amazing the Old Media didn't jump all over Obama for this conceit. Can you imagine the media giving a pass to a Republican that proposed making a new Declaration of Independence? Doubtless they would attack a Republican mercilessly for suggesting the original Declaration was out of date or no longer applicable -- as well they should.

It was built on the site of a former building which played a significant role in pre-Revolutionary activities, and in which, on 4 December 1783, General George Washington bade farewell to his officers at the end of the Revolution, before returning to his home, Mount Vernon."

As long as the republican party is paralyzed by the race issue - it will be as effective as a deer in the headlights.
The new Declaration of Independence will be written by non-whites since the old one isn't valid anymore!
Until voices are heard decrying race-based politics, we are doomed to sink deeper into the mire of the white-guilt swamp.
I think Obama is not nearly good enough.
Who are the “Framers?”

He probably wants to remove that whole spiel about “LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.
It would make it easier for him to dispose of the unwanted and political enemies.
They are just words and do not mean anything.

He wants to change it to “guarantee happiness”.
Does anyone really understand this?

He doesn't give an oath to protect the Declaration of Independence.
He will give an oath to protect the Constitution of the United States from enemies foreign and domestic.
My son came in complaining about cartoon being preempted for this and was bothered by Obama’s comment.
And Øbama will have the "imperfect" documents (Declaration, Constitution, B.O.R) "corrected" by his commie azz?

Oh, what the heck, why not? FDR's "Four Freedoms" gutted the Bill of Rights. Why not have a go at the Declaration?

It is not a new Declaration of Independence he wants but a new Bill of Rights, one that eliminates the 2nd Amendment and “bestows” special rights on others.
These idiots who use or portray the Declaration this way are ignorant fools.
The declaration was a founding document, not a formational document. the declaration stated our reasons for departing from the rule of the crown, not what kind of government we would have to replace the monarchy. It is the constitution that is our formational document that details how our republic is constituted.
If BO is saying that we need to declare independence from our republic and constitution then that is treason.
