President Bush was hated, no question about it. But he was a man hated most for the things he did right.
In all the years since 9-11, not one successful terrorist attack on US soil has been pulled off. That took quite some doing, but Bush did it and he deserves the credit for it. Most everything he is hated for by the left and elites are the things that were necessary to accomplish that feat. From the invasion of Iraq to the wiretaps to Gitmo, all of it kept America safe.
His domestic mistakes, steel tariffs, the Myers nomination, his attempt at immegration reform, failure to reform social security, the bailouts etc. are all far more deserving of being listed as his mistakes, but list them off for anybody suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome and you'll get 'Huh?' as your reply.
The bailouts will in time prove to the worst thing he did. The economy is now like a game of Jenga, and government is so desperate to add a new layer to the top that they are taking away more blocks from the base making the whole structure less stable. Sooner or later they will go for a little block at the bottom thinking they can pull it out safely when whoops! it all falls down.
If America had elected a real conservative as president, the bailout wouldn't have to be the start of a disaster, but there wasn't anybody like that to pick on election day, and that too can in part be laid at Bush's feet.
Time after time, in spite of being right on the issue, Bush sat back and let his enemies define him and his policies. Surrogates can only do so much, and who wants to be a surrogate for someone unwilling to stand up for themselves very often? Conservatism became a thing to shy away from, having no elected leader or defender.
Abroad he did the right thing, but at home this good man did nothing so evil won. I think he expected the Democrats and the media to be decent honourable people with the best interests of the country at heart. In other words, he expected them to be more like he is, and when they weren't he didn't rise to the challenge but let them pull him down instead.
When most of a country hates their president for doing the right thing, that says something about people and kind of govenment they deserve. I think they are about to get just that.

I like your post, but did it ever occur to you that he was too busy standing up for you to stand up for himself?
Those who voted for Obamessiah or supported his regime in any way deserve everything that is coming to them. However, the youngest generations of Americans are totally innocent of all this and they will end up suffering the most for it. There is not a damn thing to be happy about.

Every President has a balance of good things he did/tried versus the bad things he did/tried. Overall, Bush was on the positive side, but not by much, especially with the ridiculous socialist bailout at the end. He is a a good man. But he will never be remembered as a conservative president, because he wasn’t.
Is the Republican party better now off than 8 years ago?

Standing up for his own policies was an important part of standing up for Americans that he neglected all too often.
I really see conservatism as intrinsically a statement against conservatism.
I think Bush was radically profoundly a great Conservative.
I think he was a global conservative which I gather many conservatives find oxymoronic. Bush’s willingness to crush three of the most evil dictatorships in the world and speak so bluntly against other made him a radical anti statist.
The security of the homeland is one of the most core constitutional doctrines and the fact that he did that better than almost any President ought to earn him more than just alright.
The budget blame that is so annoying is and indication of why Americans cannot fix the budget. They blame the President and refuse to acknowledge that it is a Congressional responsiblity. There is very little the President can do about the budget and vetoing the budget is really not a reasonable option.
Bush was staunchly pro life and yet gets very little credit for that. He had a profoundly theological and Christian view of the world and got little credit for that.
This sums it up.
Yup. Other than the country is bankrupt, he was fantanstic. Who gives a crap about my grandchildren.
Although Bush did some dumb things in office, I must give him credit. He did the unthinkable for a Clinton. He took one for the team. We were attacked on 9/11 with resualts greater than Pearl Harbor. To this very day, no other plot has suceeded. Bin Laden and his kind must travel by donkey on a moonless cloudy night to evade death. Saddam is dead. We did not find WMD’a, but is that the most important outcome of the war? There are now two somewhat stable democracies in the Middle East, and Afganistan will become a third, placing Iran in a poor disposition to act against anyone. Bush has been rolled over by a steamroller by the media, but he did the American thing, he did the right thing to do.

There is a lot of truth there, but I would also include illegal immigration. It’s where I started to part ways with the man I voted for twice.
Yeah we should rewrite the constitution to make someone besides the president responsible for federal spending.
This is clearly not working.
Oh wait . . .
