When he said on the campaign trail that he'd protect the second amendment you BELIEVED him?? Seriously, any hunters or gun owners that voted for Obama need a professional check-up from the neck-up. Obama's already working against the second amendment and the people he's appointed are leading the way.

Nice choice! Try the Remington 870 or the Mossberg Persuader.

For handguns, you can always get a .38 revolver as your starter.

I am partial to Smith and Wesson revolvers, myself.

If you do, another good starter gun for you would be a Ruger SP101 in .327 Federal, smaller than a .38, but packs the same punch.

Before you buy a 12 ga you should have someone take you out and let you shoot it. Unless you’re a strong woman, a 12 ga might knock you off your feet. It’s got a big kick to it. I got a 20 ga instead of a 12 because it was too much for me. I know a 12 ga is more powerful but a 20 will get the job done if someone tries to break into your house.

He not only wants to ban all “Assault weapons” (AKA Semi-auto Rifles and Shotguns, and most Handguns), he also supports that House resolution that requires draconian registration schemes and negates all CCW permits.

The Fudds convinced themselves that B Hussein didn't want their hunting rifles and shotguns. What they fail to understand is that they're just a little further down on the list. So-called assault rifles first, then handguns and then rifles and shotguns. By the time the Fudds realize that they've been lied to, it'll be too late.

I know you have to be steady on your feet and good shoulder control, kinda’ like playing a men’s 1 iron and getting shanked in comparison i see your point - we never kept guns at home and truthfully i’ve never handled one and if things go any further with this regime i’ll be getting “handy” as they say, gotta’ learn some day, don’t you?

Trying out before buying is often a good idea, including when buying a gun.

“Unless you’re a strong woman, a 12 ga might knock you off your feet. It’s got a big kick to it.”
I’ve run both rifle/pistol and skeet ranges, and never, ever, seen even the smallest shooter knocked off their feet. My wife is 5’3”, and has no problem at all. There is also a wide range of ammo you can use, which will effect how much it ‘kicks.’ Have someone who really knows what they are doing show you how to shoot, it really helps.

Putting all his actions for just six days into perspective, along with his Rush comments and Hannity before that, I’d say his first priority is to give the big middle digit to conservatives. Contrary to the comments of the WH Presser this morning, he was not joking when he said “I won.”...all these actions are to tell us he is going to grind us into dust with the heel of his shoe.

No real information in that article. How is Obama already “going after the second amendment?”

Anyway, liberals know that banning guns just isn’t going to happen without causing a second Civil War, their real goal will be to stop the sale and development of new guns and to severely control the sale of used ones as well as ammo.

I don’t have the source, but I remember reading that the AR-15 platform has become the most common rifle platform in the country (centerfire that is...so excluding all the dirt-cheap .22s everyone and their kid has).

I’m sure it was in no small part due to the original ban. Whatever the backlash was then, it’s got to be several fold this go-around right?

Nice revolver built like a battleship. A little heavy but very controllable. I have the SP101 in .357 with a 3 1/16 barrel but run 38HP+P in it. Relatively small but packs a wallop. Won't leave home without it :~)

If they really believed that, they wouldn't be liberals.

On the UP side, remember that old saying that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it? Well, speaking as a teacher of history, I can attest that it's true. These lemmings are about to rush over the same cliff they jumped from in 1994 with that AWB. Remember? Clinton fired the first shot in lifting the ban on gays in the military and then along with trying to pass Hillary care he did pass (by ONE vote in the House) the first AWB in 1993. It took effect IIRC in 1994. The 1994 election cycle flipped the Congress to the Republicans for the first time in 40 years. Here they go .... again.

Vang Comp

And maybe if you get a pink one, Obama will like it because it reminds him of his politics.

You gotta think these things through.

Seriously, my wife and I each have vang-comps, hers on the wall on her side of the bed, and mine on the wall on my side of the bed. They're about as sweet as a shotgun can be.

But we've been thinking: All we really need is a recording of two shotguns being racked and then my wife saying, "Honey, it's not fair. You got the last one, I wanna get a shot at this one." That's gotta be cheaper than two shotguns.

The Ol' Mizris weighs 110 soaking wet. It is so funny to see her wielding her 12 ga shotty. But she shoots it just fine. But generally after a serious shotgun drill my shoulder is bruised.

You have to get in touch with your inner 8 year old boy, that's what I think. Make noise and break stuff. Wow! That's FUN!

It’s not as simple as that. My fiance has a very light weight 20 ga. with an incredible kick bc it is so light.....it even hurts my shoulders and I only shoot a 12 ga. (and my 12 ga. has nowhere the kick of that 20 ga)

As a proud member of the FR Mossberg cult let me make four suggestions.

1. Fire a shotgun of the same model you are thinking of getting. To defend yourself you have to be able to aim, fire, reload the chamber, aim and fire again quicker than someone who has just been shot at can react. Even with "low recoil" loads shotguns kick. Ask yourself if this is something you can learn to deal with.
2. Do not let recoil frighten you off. I have a friend who is (Maybe) 100 pounds and stands just over 5 feet. He shoots a Mossberg 590 12 gauge with no problem. The key is training and technique. Learn to lean into the gun and practice.
3. Don't buy a shotgun and just leave it in your closet. You may have to use the thing some day to save your life. Make a commitment to practice with it. Dedicate the time to become proficient and stay proficient.
4. Did I mention practice? There is a popular myth that you just have to point a shotgun in the general direction of a bad guy to hit him. This is not true. The pattern for 00 buckshot at 15 feet is about 3 1/2 inches. You'd be surprised how easy it is to miss with a shotgun. Practice.

Here's a link t o a brief 3 minute introductory video by a guy whose opinion I respect. Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch.

Well maybe not 'off your feet' but it might be a shoulder punisher. 20 guage (smaller dispite the bigger number) might be a better choise. Then again you might like 12. Find some local shooters and try before you buy.

Depends upon your choke and barrel length, but at 15 feet, your normal hunting type shotgun will have that much of a pattern - choke is much more of a factor further out at the range you would be aiming at birds on the wing.

One reason sawed-off shotguns are illegal is because they have a larger pattern at close range.

If you are getting it primarily for home defense, be sure to get a shorter barrel. It's not easy to navigate hallways with a bird hunting barrel to swing around.

But they aren’t illegal, they merely must be registered with an inconvenient federal process.

Which basically makes them functionally illegal to the average person interested in a home defense weapon, given the difficulty and cost of that process.

I go to an indoor range about once every other month and shoot 5 and 7 yard targets. They only allow 00 2 3/4 inch ammo. At 5 yards the pattern is a consistent 3.5 inches.

Out in the woods I’ve tried 15 pellet 3 inch magnum loads. These give a little better than a 4 inch pattern at 5 yards but the recoil is a lot greater. I’ve also tried a variety of different brands of ammo. Cheap stuff, Remmington or Wolf, tends to give a slightly larger pattern than more expensive shot.

Bird shot may give you a 12 to 16 inch pattern at 5 yards but it won’t put a bad guy on the floor.

This is out of a 18.5 inch, cylinder bore 12 gauge barrel on a Mossberg 500.

I don't have the numbers to support the "most common platform" comment either, but at last count there are over THIRTY manufacturers selling AR-pattern rifles and lower receivers. During the Clinton years there were maybe five or six.

As a rule the heavier the firearm the less percieved recoil. Most people get their wives/girlfriends the smallest, lightest piece they can find. And their significant other will hate firing it because of the recoil. I speak from personal experience. An XD-9 subcompact was not the answer for my wife, but when she fired my 1911 she fell in love with it. She now CCWs with her own full size Kimber Custom TLE/RL II in stainless.

Not to quibble about the bureaucratic headaches, but the tax for a pistol grip (no shoulder stock) short shotgun is $5. It’s $200 for a short-barreled shotgun with a shoulder stock.

All great points you posted, but proper fit is very important, too. Make sure the LOP is not too long. And a good recoil pad (or Knoxx stock) will help with the recoil.
