Half of Americans Want to Live Somewhere Else
Nietzsche is Dead ^ | 8 Feb 09 | foutsc

Posted on 02/08/2009 10:06:16 AM PST by foutsc

Almost half of Americans wish they lived somewhere else, within the US, that is. This according to a new PEW Research poll featured in USA Today.

The results are not surprising. Young people want to live in the city and older folk want to be somewhere quieter. The wide-open, down to earth South and West are more desirable than the cold, pinched North and East.

Regardless, the most important point is not mentioned: America, unlike most of the rest of the world, is a highly mobile society. Are you a progressive metrosexual stuck in Hickville, Alabama with a Baptist Church on every corner? You can move to California and get your liberal froot loop on, and you'll be one of the regulars in no time.

Not so in Germany. Yes, you're free to move where you want, but good luck trying to fit in. You will always be viewed suspiciously and referred to as the guy that talks funny. In most Latin American cities even moving to a new neighborhood can be too stressful to contemplate. In the Persian Gulf region being a fellow Muslim means nothing, tribal connections everything. If you're one of the hundreds of thousands of foreign workers there, you'll never fit in.

But we're not like that in America. Welcome, pardner! Are you escaping a bankrupt, rotten, crime-infested urban cesspool? You may want to consider checking your liberalism at the door, or you could find yourself escaping another self-made mess in 20 years or so. Unlike half my fellow Americans, I don't want to move.

I hope Pew didn't spend a lot of money getting to that conclusion...

Then only reason I remain in my godforsaken hellhole is I have a child here, otherwise I would have been gone long ago.
I reside in the The People’s Republic of Michigan.

Yes they are. That is why Virginia and North Carolina are blue states now. Soon there will only be Utah left for red state status. Well that might be exaggerated but not by much I am afraid.

Are you a progressive metrosexual hypocritical Bible-thumper stuck in Hickville, Alabama with a Baptist Church on every corner?

Not me, but I see 'em every day.

They crowd the doors to the ABC Store and throw their damn lottery tickets (that they bought in GA, TN, MS or FL) all over the place.

As for me, I drink from a 40 in a paper sack and deal with my local bookie at the pool hall.

Yep, some folks just never will fit in.

We can’t stand all the northerners moving down here trying to take over. They didn’t like it up north, but are bound and determined to change the rural south into exactly what they left.

In twenty years we’ll all be trying to escape to Canada. Obama and the dems are bankrupting the country.

Nope, nope, nope, the south has cockroaches so huge that they'll carry you off and devour you and have such a primitive understanding of architecture that we all live in caves. You yankee libs would be much, much happier staying where you are.

We can’t stand all the southerners like Jesse Jackson moving up here trying to take over. They didn’t like it down south, but are bound and determined to change the north into the corrupt one party Democrat machine rule they had down south in the 50s.

Don’t know about Australia, it’s burning to the ground right now.

I’d love to get out of Pelosi’s state. But where to go?

“cockroaches?” in the south??? Not where I live, not unless they are shipped here from the North. Maybe in some cities, but our biggest problem here is termites and you need a magnifying glass to see them or look for holes in wood..lol

I would like to move too, but must wait awhile.

One of the reasons I moved from Colorado years ago. It was being overrun by Californians turning it into another California.

From South Park:

Robert Redford: This is perfect. Why didn’t we think of it sooner? This town still has some charm left, not the mess we turned Park City into.

Phyllis: Forgive me for being observant, but, won’t we just end up doing the same thing to this town?

Robert Redford: Yes. And the town after, and the town after that. Like termites, we will move this film festival from town to town until we have used it up. And then move on, until every quiet mountain town is like Los Angeles.

Phyllis: Why? Why would we do such a thing?

Robert Redford: Because we have to live in L.A. And if we can’t live in quiet, simple, peaceful mountain towns, then nobody will! [Laughs maniacally] Waitwaitwait. Zoom in to a close-up of my face when I do that. Ready. Then NOBODY will! [the camera moves in as he laughs maniacally again] That’s it.

I hope Pew didn't spend a lot of money getting to that conclusion...

What do you mean? I hope they spent exorbitant amounts of money to reach that conclusion. Every dollar they spend on irrelevant research like this is a dollar they can't spent promoting leftist ideology that would make Mr. Pew spin in his grave.

I am sorry to be on your short list. I am from Boston and recently bought a beautiful home in the most charming southern town I have seen. I bought there because the architecture, neighborhoods and people are beautiful. I love the way I have been treated but I owe it to them to tell them I am there because I admire them, their homes, their way of life and their values. I also owe it to them to pay my taxes, volunteer when I am able and most importantly, not try to remake them into something else, something more like what I left behind.

We are not all bad. Give us a chance and show me and the people like me who have the courage to see you and the people like you, whom we admire and want to join you...a small chance to make ourselves better.

I live Placer County, CA, a nice relatively crime free, conservative place.

Now the libs are leaving Sacramento, SF, San Jose and the eastern ‘burbs of SF and coming here...largely because they don’t like their way of life there, and like ours.

But they are bringing their values with them, and almost gained a seat that normally would have been a lock for (R). Can’t count on 2010. Although Tom McClintock is far better than John Doolittle turned out to be.

"I reside in the The People’s Republic of Michigan."

No need to apologize. Michigan is America in a nutshell: Good hardworking people supporting a few lazy bums, beautiful scenery and good hunting. All imperiled by liberalism.
