I don’t think it would work with the names you listed. Liberals are snobs and political identity is their religion. Liberals have an Us vs Them mentality. It is group-think and that type of personality needs to belong to a group. In the old days liberals may have been racist. Since that is no longer acceptable today’s liberals identify with democratic party as their special “we are better than you” group. For your experiment have an unknown person claiming to be a democrat read a transcript of Rush’s program.

Yeah, I’ve known a few like that, too.

Tell you another thing. I work in a company with a huge black component. It pays good money, so these are mostly middle class, if rural, people. They have conservative thoughts on the social issues, but they can’t quite wrap their heads around Bambi’s plans. They think you are racist if you voted against him. They want lower taxes. They want the government to spend more on their problems.

They can’t see the contradictions in their own positions. These are the liberals that I work with. Most, all insofar as I know, of the whites here are conservative, so I can’t use them as gruesome examples.

On the other hand, I live in a good sized college town, in an integrated neighborhood. Most of my white neighbors are liberal, and they spout the same line. Except about the social issues.

But taken all in all, the disagreements with my black friends and acquaintances are much more civilized than the ones with the white liberals, not one of whom I consider a friend. Money issues can be negotiated, the social issues are like the I/P conflict. One side is gonna win, and one side is gonna lose.

For some reason, I seem to remember William Raspberry's retraction. I was pretty apolitical at the time, but that probably would have been around when I would listen to Rush for the pure entertainment value of it.

I would suggest that your group of liberal and "neo-liberal" (nee "moderate") pundits have crusted their brains to much to be what can truly be called "open-minded."

As Sean Connery's character in The Untouchables said, "don't go to the barrel...go to the tree." College upperclassmen and graduate students have been thoroughly indoctrinated to some degree, still are young enough that they are not set in their ways, and will work for beer money.

This is a great idea and would be beyond fascinating to witness. Unless the liberals were totally without conscience in reporting their feelings about Rush — i.e. unless after listening to him they lied through their teeth — you know Rush would be vindicated.
