IdaBriggs writes "She has financially destroyed our family, but she bought herself a new car, and she spent their entire tax refund on it.

Partial loss of rental income over 8 months has "financially destroyed [their] family"? Come on...

A tax refund bought them a new car? Either it was a heck of a big refund, a typical refund and a cheap used car, or it was the down payment on a new car. If the third, it won't last long either because they won't be able to make the payments.

I smell BS in this...

Women never lose their love for their children. Never. They may discipline, even to the point of disowning a child, but that situation will always be happy reconciled at the injunction of the child. And that has nothing to do with Catholic beliefs, teachings or practices. That’s maternal love.

Why she tolerates the “Bostonian Drunkard” may be another story. That falls within the realm of discipline. Are you sure about this? Can things be less tolerant “behind the scenes” than that which is obvious? Is the relationship as displayed on the theater known as DU a window or a blind, a cover up? Who knows? Tread lightly, Frank. You’re getting into personalities and private business on a public site...

Oh, I dunno, sir. If I were to say what I really think about that mother-son deal, it’d be too hot for the internet, and so I must desist.

It’s obvious he has nothing but contempt for her, the woman who gave him life, by the way he shames, humiliates, and embarrasses her, being a jerk.

And why she puts up with it—well, yes, some, if not most, of that can be attributed to being his mother.

But I think there’s a little bit more to that; this misconception that by bearing a certain Cross, one attains Grace and Redemption—it’s firmly embedded in the Roman Catholic mind, and endures even long after one has “rejected” the religion of one’s childhood.

As for being something else behind the curtain, I surely hope it’s something else, because if what’s shown is the truth, then she has no self-respect, and I’d like to think she has at least some.

I assure you, sir, I’m treading very lightly.

Hell, they pay ME to take it! But, Baron Bich, who I personally know, will help! Unless MachinegunKelly shoots him....

Machine Gun Slade. BTW, I would be careful whose veracity you want to challenge. I am hereby claiming that my father got an enemy general to surrender his army to him while he was a corporal impersonating a general while wearing ONLY a dirty pair of shorts, boots, and not even a shirt. Please go ahead and challenge me on that one.

Sorry, but some of us do naturally attract wild adventures and/or circumstances plus it runs in the family. But my claim about being published in the Wall Street Journal. That was BS. You got me there. Hee! Hee!

OK. That's fine. I spend no time there so have no insight into those people. What little I know comes through the DUFunnies, and that's quite enough, even in small doses.

Someone who publicly embarrasses anyone, let alone a parent, has issues of their own that are perhaps more embarrassing than those they put on that parent. They don't know this, of course, but they're there, and any thoughtful person should pick up on them with a little exposure. And that's one of the "things" about the DU. There's just so much of it laid out on the table. So much craziness, so little time...

If this were a private thing, this mother-son deal, it would be impolite to pry, but it’s been out on stage for all the world to see for years.

Why it intrigues me so much is in the original article; how the relationship between a parent and a child evolves as the child becomes an adult, and then middle-aged, something with which I’ve had no experience.

I am assuming—and I hope to God I’m right—that it is not the “norm” for adult children to hurt their ageing parents. There are those who do, but I certainly hope it’s not considered normal or healthy behavior, and least not commendable behavior.

There is a very good sociological, psychological, besides moral, reason the commandment about honoring one’s parents exist; it wasn’t just something pulled out of thin air.

It’s perhaps okay to not particularly care for a parent if that parent had been a lousy parent, but it’s not okay to not respect that parent who gave one life—because ultimately it means one hismelf has no self-respect.

Well, that's the nub of the matter, isn't it? No, I see nowhere where our society believes it alright for adults to disrespect, let alone harm or abuse their parents. Such action is unconscionable. I don't know whether it is acceptable in other societies or not, but not in Western society.

I don't know if you've visited PJ's most recent DU where our "Bostonian Drunkard" has an online conversation with his mother. I found the back-and-forth to be very strange. If one reads the exchanges with any degree of objectivity, it's as though there is no relationship outside of what we're seeing. Case in point: He inquires who in New Hampshire may be considered by their governor to replace Senator Gregg (this conversation takes place prior to Gregg's backing out of the Commerce post). It's as if they don't talk of such things beyond their DU presence. Very odd, IMO.

I know that if my parents were alive and one was a FReeper, our online discussions would be laced with our background relationship. I don't see how that could be avoided.

In any event, I have to get my daily ping set up, then get ready for work. Good conversation. I've enjoyed it. Have a great day, Frank.

But keep the comments coming....

(Ewer, and Do tell us your “super secret” source of FROZEN PIZZA! I am sure you could tell us but then Machinegun Kelly (slade, whoever) would then have to kill us? Right?).... ...."Sorry, but some of us do naturally attract wild adventures".... I CAN'T stop LAUGHING! You would not know what wild is. You are so wild that you spend 12 hours a day posting on the internet???? Yup, you one wild dude....

Yeah, large frozen pizzas sold at a buck (usually $1.25) are completely outside of the realm of possibility. I better tell that to all those aggressive ladies who used to line up on Saturday mornings at Payless Foods at the Southwest corner of State Road 7 and Margate Blvd. in Margate for those 4 for 5 dollar food deals. And why would I want everybody and his uncle to swarm that place and grab the pizzas that I already have trouble enough buying? You know the location now because they don’t have the pizza deals like that any longer (although any of the cashiers there can confirm that they did a few months ago).
