I once asked a Secret Service Agent if it was true that was an Uzi under his coat.

I was escorted from the room.

True story.

Wasn’t cool at the time though, it was embarassing. I had to get back in the room to do my job.

Good video. It makes the point that Pres. Bush will be a “high value target” for some time. I sure hope the change of limited protection for ex-presidents is changed for him.

Although I learned you don’t ask a Secret Service Agent what weapons they have, it was cool watching them work. It was for the vice president in a huge college gymnasium complex.

They did a “rolling block” with the agents peeling off the back going up further along the VPs path, communicating the whole way. They swept and guarded each area he passed with more agents at each place he was to stop.

Quite a thing to watch these guys work when their protectee is on the move.

They aren’t known for their sense of humor.

I was once at an auxiliary bldg at Burbank airport in So. CA in the early 80’s, in a lunchroom, when the then-VP landed. I was working at a non-aviation related electronics biz at the time. We of course knew nothing about it, we were just lunch-eating nerds. The SS cleared us all out of the room as it was off a hallway leading out to the tarmac. They’re not in the business of talking any chances.

Deep Thoughts:

“I think a good gift for the president would be a chocolate revolver. And since he’s so busy, you’d probably have to run up to him and hand it to him.”

Serious business and serious folks. It was a dumb thing for me to do. You don’t want to even try to strike up a conversation with an agent on duty. When I think about it, I realize I was interfering with his job. Really dumb.

They have a tough job that requires constant intense attention to duty, and I don’t imagine it attracts or keeps those who like to chit-chat. :)

I was invited by our Precinct Committee Officer to join him and 2 bus loads of others that were invited to see President Bush off during a Seattle area trip. The security was impressive. I could not guess what was in the black containers the Secret Service was carrying up with them to the roof of the airport terminal. Prior to going through the security check point we were not allowed to take any pictures. At the check point they had us turn on our cameras in front of them, I guess to show they were a real camera. If you did take photos prior to going through the check point they asked you to hand over the film or erase the chip, even if the photo was taken while you were still on the bus. Once inside it was pretty much normal and you could take photos again, as long as you stayed within the rope area. We were right beside Air force One. Bush, coming from Fort Lewis landed in Marine One and was supposed to walk our line to shake hands - but it was during this helicopter trip he received news about an American in Iraq who had his head chopped off by terrorist, so instead he took a beeline to some press that was staged for his comment.

It was a day I will never forget.

I was in Germany in the early 80’s and got called in to open a shelter facility. I opened it up and in walked President Reagon with whole entourage.
