Obama Announces Withdrawal of All U.S. "Combat" Troops from Iraq by August 2010 - Video 2/27/09

Here is video of President Barack Obama today announcing his plan to withdraw all combat mission U.S. Troops from Iraq by August of 2010. He made the announcement in a speech before U.S. Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Obama's plan will leave 50,000 U.S. Troops in Iraq after the August 2010 deadline, but they will not be classified as "combat" troops. He said he wanted all troops out of Iraq by the end of 2011. But Obama left wiggle room to alter these plans based on what happens in Iraq between now and then.

Obama clearly wanted to leave the impression he is keeping his campaign pledge to "end the war in Iraq." But he has listened to his military advisers in leaving 50,000 troops in Iraq past the withdrawal date of "combat" troops in August 2010. That is a good thing.

President Obama delivered a truly wonderful speech today, eloquently praising the success of our troops. He couldn't quite bring himself to use the words "victory," or "won" to describe what our troops have accomplished in Iraq, but he did say emphatically that they "got the job done." He's right - they did. Despite the doubt of most of the Democratic Party, including Obama himself, they got the job done.

Obama pledged to provide better health care to veterans and said he was raising the pay of our military personnel. That got a lot of applause, and Obama is right to do both.

The far-left will not be happy with Obama's plan. I suspect, we will see some level of U.S. troop presence in Iraq long after the 2011 deadline Obama set for all troops to be removed. . . . . . . (Watch Video)

Except for the 50,000 who will be left there to “control” (NOT “combat”) terrorism, of course.

SO all they have to do is hold out till 2010 and they win.

Are the liberals upset that he's not pulling them out at once now?

What a moron. 2010 may end up being the right time to get most of the troops out, but why announce it? He’s making politics out of a war in an attempt to please his sycophants.

“SO all they have to do is hold out till 2010 and they win.”

It will be done at the ballot box. As troop levels drop, the fundamentalist movement will grow. At some point, Iraq is going to elect a fundamentalist Islamic majority, which will establish sharia (sp?) law.

It isn’t a matter of IF, only when.

This is only possible because of Bush’s surge. Which Lord Obama opposed.

Excuse me but those are the security agreements that were already in place by Bush and the Iraqi government. How dare that weaseal take credit for work that he did not do!

Bush’s Security agreements already in place:

- All troops withdrawn from cities by June 2009.
- Begin withdrwing troops back to the states.
- All troops withdrawn by end of 2011.

Obama’s plan:

- All troops out of Iraq by August 2010 EXCEPT 50,000 troops.

“SUBMISSION ACCOMPLISHED!”

That needs to be on a very large banner and hung when all can see.

It would make a great bumper sticker.

I think the real headline here should be Obama adopts the Bush drawdown plan, after calling the Bush plan “too little to late” during his campaign against Hillary.

If he actually follows through on this, it’ll be the first thing he’s done that I approve of.

Right now it’s just a “pledge” or a “promise”.

zero is probably thinking this is a 2-fer.

He can surrender iraq and bring the troops back to the US where he suspects he can use them on a similar mission supressing us.
