Seattle paper says workers told jobs will end

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has told employees they might lose their jobs as soon as next week after a deadline for Hearst Corp to sell the newspaper passed on Monday.

Hearst, which also may close the San Francisco Chronicle if the paper cannot cut costs, has not yet decided what to do with the Seattle paper, the Post-Intelligencer reported on its website on Tuesday.

"These options exist: 1) Seek buyer. If no buyer, then 2) Go digital, or 3) Close. No decision has been made," Hearst spokesman Paul Luthringer told the paper.

The paper has notified its roughly 170 employees that their jobs will end between March 18 and April 1, but said that it could shut down at any time.

Hearst must pay employees through March 18.

If they ‘go digital’ they will still have to fire 95% of them or more.

What’s the chances that if a conservative bought this fish wrapper and ran it like a newspaper it would succeed? Just asking!

I can’t speak for this paper, but I know if the Philadelphia Inquirer was an honest, straight down the middle paper I would buy it again, but even though they are in bad shape , that idea would never come into play.

Selling a "conservative" paper in Seattle?

Ice water and Hell come to mind.

How about we get someone in Congress to propose a TAX!
A TAX on NEWSPRINT!
Whereas the production of newspapers causes trees to be cut down, hauled by polluting trucks to polluting paper mills, and hauled from paper mills to publishers and
Whereas the production of newspapers requires toxic ink and solvents and energy wasting machinery and
Whereas the distribution of newspapers requires the use of dirty internal combustion engines and
Whereas a large portion of every landfill is used for discarded newspapers
Therefore:
Be it resolved that a Newsprint tax, of $1,000.00 per pound, be charged to EVERY newspaper with a daily subscription, within the United States!
________________________________________
We should get some Republican to propose THIS as an amendment to any “cap and trade” or “carbon tax” proposal that comes up!
Maybe we can make it like “Cap and Trade” and use the revenue generated, from this tax on dirty dinosaur newspapers subsidize a tax credit for home computers and digital devices?

"and ran it like a newspaper"

When Tucker Carlson suggested that conservatives should be a little more concerned with reporting and less concerned with commentating he was roundly booed at CPAC.

What makes you think that conservatives would even care to report the news?

What makes you think that conservatives are qualified to report the news? Conservatives have been told for decades to stay away from the journalism industry and journalism school.

Can you picture El Rushbo taking the time to call dozens of sources, dredge through years of microfiche, and jab his foot into the doors of several uncooperative businesses and government agencies in order to get a story?

I don’t think these asshats do that. I think they get tingly feelings up their legs.

I hope the laid off P-I newsroom employees don't riot, like it was 1999.

I was fearing some leftist moron with bucks was going to step in and save it - but it looks like the death of this leftist rag is actually going to happen. We still have its only slightly less liberal Seattle Times to deal with but I hear its having financial problems of its own.

Even the rich liberals in Silicon Valley dont want to save the SF Chronicle.

On the Seattle Times, which openly celebrated the resignation of Karl Rove with a party by the editors, caught by the media...their end will soon come.
