Going Galt. I've written about it, without actually calling it that. Michelle Malkin has written about it extensively and has been covering a largely growing movement that is rising among American Achievers that consider themselves to be doing just what the name of the movement implies: Going Galt.

The initial fact of the matter is that those of us conisdered right-of-center, whether we be Conservatives or Libertarians or what have you, establish for ourselves a personal moral code of ethics by which we live our lives. Wherever we may disagree on social issues, we are 100% in lockstep on one very clean and simple idea: whosoever perfoms a task of value shall be compensated for it fairly for what the market will bear, and that compensation rightly belongs to him.

Yes.

Sure, Paul, whatever. Love the brave words. Please get back to us the day you decide to “go Galt” and quit paying your income and property taxes. I want to be there when the Party Van comes by to drag you off to Club Fed.

Armchair Atlas.

I used to have a business that did around 4 million a year.

I shut it down and work by myself now.

"going Galt" does not mean dropping out all together, it just means stopping feeding the beast as much as possible.

B-Chan misses the point. To “go Galt” means to stop producing. When the real producers stop producing or dramatically slow down, there is not much in the way of income taxes due. Many have already “gone Galt” and many more will do so in the next few years. As John Galt did, most of us fly under the radar.

Ah the magic words...it’s the principle. This is what the looters don’t understand because they have none.

I have had a nagging feeling for quite a while, it started out as the occasional frustration with an irrational policy but then less and less I could hardly bare to turn on the news or pick up the paper. I have finally realized what it is, resignation. I am tired. Tired of beating my head against the wall to instill initiative in people who will never feel compelled to work in order to earn what they have. Tired of trying instill honor and integrity in people who only care about themselves, taking from others out of some sense of entitlement. I finally get it, they have nothing to offer me. I don’t care about them, I don’t care what they want, I don’t care what they need, I owe them nothing, I have no responsibility to them. I will do everything in my power to starve the beast including reduction of earnings and reduced consumption.

The left thinks this is irrational. They think I am stupid because I will reduce the amount of money coming into my household. Again IT’S THE PRINCIPLE! I will feel better knowing in some small way I am taking back some control! I will never submit to their will.

Ah, so it's a question of degree. I thought "going Galt" meant refusing to participate in any immoral economic activity, to refuse to live one's life for the sake of another. Now I see that you can be a real Randian without going all the way to the Gulch -- just "dramatically slow down" your output a bit (and post a bunch of bull on the Internet) and you can relax behind your impenetrable force field, your Objectivist hymen intact.

Well, count me in. I have just decided to "go Galt" by not reporting the $40.50 in loose change I saved up in my Keroro bank over the past three months. That'll show those altruists in Washington who drives the motor of the world!

It doesn't take living Eric Rudolf style to "go Galt". If the most productive sectors of society refuse to take risks, if ordinary consumers cut back to bare necessities, and if even average wage slaves decide not to give a little extra towards working overtime, then we starve the beast.

All we have to do is to pare things back to the bone, and we produce misery for the idiots that voted for Mr. Hopey Changey, and get the mushy middle's head out of their posterior long enough to see where they went wrong. We don't have to convert the moonbats, we just need to get the people who don't think about elections until the weekend before them to see the light, and give them a rational choice to put grown-ups back in charge.

I'll admit, there was not that clear-cut a choice for them last time around.

So they capitalize “Achiever”? A true achiever is anybody who does honest work whether they be an entrepreneur, physician, fast food worker or garbage man. The fictional Galt’s Gulch wouldn’t work too well without anybody to pick up the trash or keep the sewers working. This “we don’t need you” nonsense is good for silly high school students and fantasy for the frustrated, but unless you want to rough it like Daniel Boone, the real world is a world of interdependence. Informed political citizenship and the repairing work of the free market over time will do more to set things right than dreams of a ridiculous novel written by an arrogant militant atheist.

As soon as you decide to “go Ragnar” and steal the government’s gold to recompensate me for the taxes they have taken from me, then sure.

Hah!
