Any FReepers out there considering a move overseas? Switzerland? Costa Rica?
China! I can pollute all I want!
What makes you think that other countries TOLERATE immigration?
Only the US is so stupid as to let 10s of millions take over a country without restraint.
I’ve heard the Aussies are standing up to mooslimes. If that’s the case, I’m ready to go.
Can an American ‘retire’ to Switzerland? Live there 6 months per yr?
If you don’t change citizenship, you’ll still have to pay US taxes and may not be elligble for medical coverage.
The people are friendly, for the most part if you stay away from the southern portions, the cost of living is low, the climate is good, and I can live on rice, fruit, and seafood.
Problem is that America is the last holdout of freedom of both people and markets. If we crumble and slip by the wayside quite a few of the other “safe” countries will follow us in fairly short order. In Atlas Shrugged there was no place to run besides Galt’s Gulch.
I really hope that something like that exists so that if things go to hell there will be something left to start rebuilding.
Uhm not exactly. Actually Australia has a greater problem with Muslim gangs and immigrants than we do (Lebanese and Indonesian Muslims).
I would not ‘change’ my citizenship...
Good point about US taxes...they still want them, but if I structure my retirement income, they could be low...no lower because I was over there, I realize.
Wonder what the cost to live there is...
New Zealand
My grandfather often joked that once he retired, he would go to the “great white north” and become a lone prospector or mountain man.
With the current state of affairs with various govenments, I can now appreciate his sentiments.
Poland, Czech Republic, or Slovakia.
There are a lot of “overseas” to seek out, but it is perfectly possible to continue to live in the US, with some caveats. One is living below the radar, off the net if that is feasible. “Going Galt” with great sums of cash or other accumulated wealth is available only to a limited few, and it is difficult to stay off the radar. The only tactic then is to become a very evasive moving target, at least forcing them to spend an inordinate amount of ammunition as they shoot and miss. The one saving grace is that the new, but failing, nascent obama regime are lousy shots, and they are uncertain of their capabilites.
So far.
Once they manage to mobilize their “Civilian Defense Force” and fan out among the general population, the regime will take on a much more stern and effective grip on the reins of power. Then expect to see large relocations of parts of the citizen-subjects to “re-education” camps.
No, if I did I’d probably wind up neighbor to Alec Baldwin. Oh, wait, he didn’t leave as announced, did he? I’ll stay and fight, otherwise the DUmmie community will look at this thread as proof of our silliness...
Heard it went socialist. And they denied a man immigration there because he was “obese”.
The rest of the world does not believe in open borders. We’ve been fed a lie.
I’ve heard that you can not ever become a Japanese citizen. Ever. Even marriage isn’t guaranty.
I’ve heard that Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua are becoming popular retirement places for Americans. Not only are we outsourcing our jobs, we’re also outsouring our retirements (to those who CAN retire).
I have some friends doing a three year stint in Switzerland for his job with a pharmaceutical company. Incredibly expensive for just about everything, with decent cuts of meat astronomical. Not particularly friendly people. And if you think it’s some sort of libertarian utopia you’re wildly mistaken. They had to take a government-required class on how to separate their trash, how to bundle the waste paper, what kind of string to use, etc. They’re counting down the days until they can come back.
Outside of the fact that I was there to visit a particular Asian princess I fancy ... the Philippines is a place worthy of looking into.
There's a housing market that looks viable for an investor, healthy to foreigners because of the Paradisical climate and an economy that seems (I'm no financial wizard .. just a superficial observer) to lend itself for a comfortable retirement with little life style adjustment.
You just nailed a KEY point; we as Americans cannot abandon this great land just because of a “usurper” (Amb. Keyes)

I suppose I should not look elsewhere for my peace and liberty, but should fight like all past generations of Americans have.
When is the next Tea Party in Texas scheduled?
And is Rick Santelli still on the air? I didnt see him this morning...
oh, but “open borders” are true....if you have MONEY.
I’m sure that if Bill Gates wishes to immigrate to some other country, the doors would open.
Already live there!
Beautiful country. Low taxes. A bit too far to the left.
You won’t escape the taxman though - your world wide income is taxable.
“Uhm not exactly. Actually Australia has a greater problem with Muslim gangs and immigrants than we do (Lebanese and Indonesian Muslims).”
Figures. I guess there’s no where to hide.
America is the best last hope my FReind,
The shining city on a hill.
no 2nd amendment rights is Austraila!!!
My husband and I are retired. We lived in France twice as retired persons in 1996 and 1997. We had a young daughter who attended the public school in France so we had to obtain visas to live there. It wasn’t that hard to do, and neither of us speaks French, and today with the internet it is a whole lot easier. If I were doing it today I’d rent through craigslist.com.
australia, like many countries, has a means test and age test for immigrants I think. Do not apply unless you are young and rich.
Unless you go to Timor and then set out in a small rickety boat
There’ll be somewhere to go if Alaska (or another red state or group-of-states) secedes.
If Obama breaks the Constitution then mass-secession will provide a place to stand and move the world again.
Panamas = Panama
There are many great things about Panama if one is retired. To calm folks down, one need not learn a new language. It would be nice to know two languages, but it is not necessary.
Those who like to shop can get U.S. goods on the shelves and other goodies from around the world.
There is U.S. merchandize all over the place in every area...again to repeat...IN EVERY AREA.
Aside from some cultural differences, it is like living in the U.S.A.
(The traffic is not tolerable.)
“Ive heard that Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua are becoming popular retirement places for Americans.”
Unless it is money, I would never recommend Nicaragua. Costa Rica is okay but not as progressive as Panama.
Culturally, Panama is not part of Central America. It is part of South America. Remember, Panama was part of Colombia.
Costa Rica and above is “Central America” and they are all pretty backwards.
How ‘bout Belize? They speak English and I’m told Belize has never been hit by a hurricane.
“How bout Belize? They speak English and Im told Belize has never been hit by a hurricane.”
Neither has Panama.
I don’t mean for my commment to be short...but that is fact. I am here to answer any and all questions you want. After all, I would love for you to move to Panama.
Belize is just another backward centeral American country.
P.S.
Take a look at a map and you will see why Panama is not hit by hurricanes. Venezuela and Colombia landmasses protect Panama from hurricanes.
I love it!!!
