Illinois is the first battleground for a Freedom of Choice Act at the state level.
The Illinois FOCA bill made it out of a House committee, sending it to the House floor. Eric Scheidler of the Pro-Life Action League tells OneNewsNow that success caught them by surprise.
"I think the reason for that is that Planned Parenthood is pouring resources into supporting this bill," says the pro-life activist. "They see that they're not [likely] to get the national FOCA bill...at this time, so they're going to the states [and] they're dumping a lot of money and a lot of effort into this."
And he says FOCA is dangerous to the pro-life movement because it will do away with any and all restrictions on abortion.
"There can be no interference with a woman getting an abortion," he explains. "So this would mean, for example, that Illinois' ban on partial-birth abortion would be thrown out."
And as for parental notification in Illinois? "We have a bill [that was] passed in the mid-90s that has never been enforced because our enemies on the anti-family side have been trying to keep it tied up in federal court," says Scheidler.
Passage of the FOCA bill would mean the death of the parental notification bill. There will be a strong effort to defeat the measure in Illinois, but Scheidler says such an effort would also send a strong message to Washington to not introduce a FOCA bill at the federal level.
