On April 4, 1968, LIFE photographer Henry Groskinsky and writer Mike Silva, on assignment in Alabama, learned that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had been shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. They raced to the scene and there, incredibly, had unfettered access to the hotel grounds, Dr. King's room, and the surrounding area. For reasons that have been lost in the intervening years, the photographs taken that night and the next day were never published. Until now.

I was 12 years old when a neighbor lady phoned for my mother. She was upset and crying because MLK had just been killed.

A couple months later I remember my father waking me up at around 11pm to tell me RFK had just been shot.

My memories of the 'Summer of Love.'

Wish we had a picture of J. Jackson making sure he had MLK blood on his coat, so he could do a Jackie O!

I remember the day RFK was shot because there were no cartoons on that morning. BIG deal for a kid!

I also remember seeing the Manson killings on the front of the newspaper on my birthday. Wow...the 60's...such fun memories.....
