And how did we handle this before SS and SSI? Family, friends and faith. The problem with our society today is that many of these programs actually seem to separate us from those who do or should love us. These government programs have allowed family, especially, to foist off its problems to the impersonal government which does not have the power—willpower or enforcement—to insist that folks clean up their acts if they want benefits. This led to the benefits being diluted by supporting drug addicts, alcoholics, AIDS sufferers, and psychological malingerers. It also upped the incentive to game the system. Coupled with the 60s generation which wanted no one telling them what to do, we created an entire generation (or two or three) which wants to be independent of family and other support groups except for the government. The end result we saw in France awhile back during that heat wave where kids and grandkids took off for the beach while grandmere and grandpere died of heat stroke in the government subsidized apartments.

I don’t want to minimize the suffering of folks on SS and SSI, nor do I impugn those who are truly disabled, but perhaps the silver lining in this will be to help people reconnect with their own family and faiths and start behaving as though their lives depended on it.

Most of these people have no families. Some of the people I met who were ripped off by relatives who used the SSI scam. The churches of our land don't care and pay no heed to the lords commands to help the poor. We NEED to minimize their suffering but the current system we have won't work. We have to many regulations and restrictions keeping people out of the work force. IE: YOu need a social security card and photo ID or no work, the employers have to pay fees and taxes that make them cut jobs and wages. Some of these people are handicapped and can't work. In addition, the family system is in shambles and people are getting benefits because they dont want to work, just do drugs and make trouble.

At best the ONLY time government should give out benefits is if the recipient is unable to work because he is to old, physically or mentally challenged or out of their mind. THAT'S IT! Nothing for people who CAN work for a living.

We don't need guvmint control making people do anything like this. They already control enough of our lives. I'm sick of all the laws and control we are getting. America use to be FREE and with morals. Now it's less free and no morals. It's becoming like Britain.

Me. You’re story is me. I am disabled and forced to retire. If not for my young adult sons, I would be homeless. Thankfully, 22 years ago, when I divorced, I didn’t spend my time running around trying to find another husband...I concentrated on properly raising my sons, doing all that was best for them first, and maintaining a career. Unfortunately doing it alone, I never remarried, it took it’s toll on my physical health. However, my sons have stepped up to the plate...”family first” they say. Even though I am now on SSD, I am so grateful for the sacrifices they have made and continue to make every day. I am not ashamed to accept the so-called “entitlements” I paid into throughout my career. My regret is that without SSD, the burden will be far, far greater on my sons. They are all under 30....far too young, IMO, to have to already be caring for their mother. THIS is the reason, for me personally, that I do whatever in my power I can to fight illegal immigration/amnesty.
