One explanation for no Mexican origin in a flu ostensibly originating in Mexico: It’s a man-made strain purposely released among the populace.

Hmm. That’s certainly interesting. The first place it was diagnosed was in the US near San Diego, where (IIRC) it was thought to be an Asian swine flu until more thoroughly analyzed. I think it was first identified by the Navy’s health service, which monitors things like this very closely. Someone posted an interesting article a couple of days ago on this.

Interesting that there’s so much Northern Midwest presence in it. I didn’t even realize it was possible to break it down to that level.

Obama’s election was guaranteed by the perfect storm of market crash etc., in september. Now, 3 months into his administration, this pops up. Given that genetic manipulation is a reality, I am unwilling to discount any non-coincidence theory at this point.

If I made a custom-made bug to kill off a segment of mankind - why would I release it in Mexico, where TIME would eventually transmit it across the world (ie. Cancun, Coszomel, et. al.) largely though tourism? First off, the likely carriers will be young, fit, college people on spring break - these kids have great immunity, and a large portion will resist the bug. This bug would then spread from Mexico (and invade other countries indiscriminately).

If I made a bug, I’d release it in a busy US airport hub(O’Hare, Denver, Houston, Salt Lake), where I’d likely get a HUGE and sudden domestic infection rate. The age group in a typical airport consists of young families travelling, businessmen (who are older, and typically not in the prime of their life), the elderly. A good cross-section; each dispersing to infect a very wide area.

The entire goal, is to cripple your target, consume his resources, demoralize and weaken your target. Mexico is a lousy target. They are not densely populated, they have no economic, military or manufacturing backbone to break. Face it, without the US holding that backbone in place, it would break by itself solely due to the corrupton inherent in Mexican politics.

Sorry, I don’t buy it.

There are no Mexican genes because Mexico has never been identified as a source of influenza before. You have to have a history before you point back to a gene or virus and say it’s similar to a previous one.

These genes don’t have a nationality in any event.

The N1 protein (neuraminidase) shows evidence of having come from China, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Hokkaido, Japan, Chonburi and Chachoengsao (Thailand) and Italy.

Thailand?

We had a call last night from our school district about the “flu pandemic.” The recording told us nothing specific about measures they’d take, only that they were “watching the situation closely” and that they would keep us informed.

The recording also made mention that the district’s head nurse has just returned from a seminar on this very topic. My wife just raised her eyebrows and shook her head. That struck us both as a little odd.

The local news last night covered the SWINE FLU PANDEMIC (their emphasis, not mine). It looks like we’re getting ramped up for something; probably the left hand trying to distract us from what the right hand is doing.
