Today, while I was in the middle of this post about Senator Specter and his likely opponent, Pat Toomey, the news surfaced that Specter is switching parties to become a Democrat. This is probably a gain for Republicans, since Specter mostly voted Democrat, and it saves the conservative, Toomey, from a tough and expensive primary fight. Toomey can go on to defeat Specter in the general election, and Specter has no guarantee that he will win the Democratic primary anyway. I have changed this post to a short excerpt, instead of the lengthy interview I was planning to publish in two installments.

I am glad he switched. I see it as nothing but a positive. He had moved the GOP to the left his whole career.
What are Toomey’s chances of winning if Dems put up someone instead
of Specter? We seem to be losing every where else.

Realistically, it is going to be difficult for Toomey, let’s face it. But there will certainly be a very strong clash of principle and that is good for us, longterm if not short term!
Oh puhleeze. Don't demonstrate ignorance here. You don't think the DNC and Ed Rendell promised Specter the primary win?
If arlen has switched parties now, the demonrats will use him and then toss him aside. Specter does not know how to be loyal to a party. Toomey can win against anything the dems put up.

I plan to send money to Toomey and would encourage everyone here and other conservatives to back individual candidates for 2010! The RNC failed to understand what we have been saying that guys like Spector ARE NOT on OUR SIDE and don’t deserve to be backed financially or anything else!
But we can kick YouKnowWhat in the 2010 election.
Au contraire! IIRC, the record for the GOP in post-Nov. 4 elections (specials, etc.) is 3-2. The two that we lost were:
1) Rosanna Pulido (FR's own ChicagoLady) in IL-5 who was running in an extremely Democrat-heavy district (Rahm Emanuel's old district) and who had virtually no ILGOP support whatsoever - she still managed to pull in 25% of the vote, which is slightly higher than what the GOP pulled in the contests against Emanual in 2008, 2006, and 2004. Rosanna is to be commended for doing quite well, all things considered! All the same, there was about zero chance of her actually winning in such a Blue district :(
2) Jim Tedisco in NY-20, who despite running a terrible campaign, managed to come within a hairsbreadth of taking back a seat from the Dems which, since the 2003 redistrict, had been a "safe" Democrat seat (Dems win by 20% or more).
Even in these losses, I'd say we did better than we had any right to expect - which I find encouraging, not discouraging.
This is so typical. Once again we see the “liberal” or “democrat” how ever they refer to themselves other than communist, turning out to be a lying worthless excuse dependant scrap of trash. So after how many years he is finally coming out of the closet and admitting he is a commie?
That would be TWENTY NINE. Twenty nine years and now all of a sudden he has “become” a democrat.

WRONG....
Per KOS, part of the deal is that the Party will support NO primary challengers against Spector. And the AFL-CIO has already promised Spector HUGE support if he votes for the end of Democratic Elections in America with Card Check/EFCA.
Didn’t Casey and Rendell recently promise Specter he would have no party backed primary challenge if he would switch to the Democrat party?
That won't be easy. The GOP has more seats to defend in the Senate in 2010, and more open seats to defend as well.
Not until 2012 will Democrats have more turf to defend in the Senate.
Yep. Perfect timing - now a real Republican can pick up his seat.
