We keep waiting everyday to see stories that the Obama induced run on buying guns, magazines, and ammunition has stopped, or even slowed down. It hasn't. It doesn't even seem to be on the foreseeable horizon. When is that article coming? Apparently no time soon. I find 3 or 4 stories every day lamenting the lack of merchandise and continuing runs on it.
If you visit your local shooting range you will even probably see that there are a lot fewer target shooters. They are holding on to what they have. Its getting to expensive to shoot like we used to do.
One ammunition supplier representative that we spoke to told us that his company's production line is running 24/7. He said they might catch up in 8 or 9 months. But on the upside, they have been hiring. Give Obama credit for job creation. Its still a good time to buy stock in Olin.
Ammo can be found if you look hard enough. Dunhams, a 12 store sporting goods chain stretching from South Dakota to Pennsylvania, has ammunition. And, you will pay dearly for it. Surplus Ammunition prices are up 500% and more, and a common AK47 clone will now run $600.00 to $700.00.
Let's hope Obama doesn't "reluctantly" decide to manage the gun and ammunition business. He's "reluctantly" running Car manufacturers and banks, but take heart. He said this week that, "You know, I don't want to run auto companies. I don't want to run banks."

I went to the store yesterday. Couldn’t find a box of 9mm ammo. They were sold out and had no idea when they were getting more. When I looked surprised, the sales clerk looked at me like, “where the heck have you been, in a coma?”
You see how, step by step , they create all the right conditions for the DHS statement to “come true”???
It’s called a self-fulfilling prophecy.
All they need to do is act on the “gotta grab guns up here
just to help Mexico, if for no other reason”, as it looked like they were planning a few weeks ago, and they’ve effectively spurred all of what they want to characterize as right wing crazies into action. It’s a win-win for them.
But they’re gonna lose-lose-—they’re just not that bright and their timing will inevitably be off.
Similar experience at my local big box sporting goods store:
A guy walked up and asked the the gun department manager if they had any .380 ACP ... the manager just started laughing and gestured to the 30' long pistol ammo display behind him ... it was completely empty.
I have posted a couple times that Obama cannot control this through conventional means and he is going to stage something to create a crisis that requires extensive control. Count on it. Bank on it. If all of us are right wing terrorists, then there will be nothing that this bunch wont stoop to, and with the balance of power in the congress, there is no assurance that there would be any investigation.
On the contrary, the ranges are packed with people who are sighting-in new rifles and handguns. The last two times I went to the range, I had to wait for a slot to open up on the firing line. Previously, I've only seen that on the weekend before the beginning of deer season.
I see this as more of the same: sighting-in before "hunting season".
So, a new company coming into the biz needs at least a million bucks for startup costs, needs to wait a few months for the ATF to process the license (Type 06, 07, and 10 FFL's don't just grow on trees), find an insurer, find suppliers who have product available, hire people, and start production. By the time all that happens the buying craze will either be over, or BHO/Dems will have succeeded in outlawing everything anyway and driven the demand down to the point where your cost of production exceeds the price you can charge for ammo.
Over at CheaperThanDirt.com, .45 ammo by Sellior & Bellot is selling for $41.79, which is about triple what it was 12 months ago. I generally would use 2 boxes per session at the range. Not any more.
I was happy to leave with my one box, leaving the other two to other potential new gun owners.
Guys, we're part of the problem here: if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, don't go and buy a whole case and wipe out your store single-handedly.
Look on the bright side here: it's FMJ range ammo that's impossible to get. Hollow point defensive rounds still seem readily available. We'll know it's really SHF time when we can't get defensive ammo.
For years now, I’ve been pondering a technology whose time may have finally come—a “bullet-less” training gun.
Picture this. A handgun that when fired closely simulates the look, sound and feel of a real handgun, using compressed gas, and a laser.
The US Army had a system like this using blanks for years, called MILES. But instead of blanks, why not use compressed gas?
A special, laser sensitive target would be used on a range to simulate bullet holes when the trigger is pulled.
The big advantage is, of course, saving a ton of money. Thus you could practice a lot more. And you wouldn’t have to clean your gun after going to the range.
From another thread, primers are made by the ammo manufacturers, and they are using all they make for their own ammo, so there's none left over for sale. Primers will be in short supply long after the ammo shortage eases up, due to pent-up demand from reloaders.
Once things ease up (if they ease up), reloaders will (and should) buy and stockpile primers. You can cast your own bullets from scrap lead. You can re-use brass. If it comes down to it, you can make your own gunpowder. But if you don't have primers, you're out of luck.
You can get a CO2 air gun 1911 which shoots .177 pellets, so you can practice cheaply in your basement.
The range I frequent in Texas is packed on Saturdays.
Pellets are one thing, but I’m looking for “look-feel-sound”, so if say, you are firing a .38, it simulates that in every way except a bullet coming out and a casing ejection in an automatic.
I went along with my wife to the local WalMart a couple of hours ago. While she grocery shopped, I made my regular stop at the sporting goods counter. I almost fainted when the clerk said he had some 38 Special in stock.
I bought the two box limit, at $14.50 per box, and was thankful for small miracles. On the down-side, it has been months since they had any .380, but I’ll keep checking and hoping.
You then ask them to page your wife, so she can buy her two boxes.
