When I read the portion of Frederick Douglass’ autobiography where he recounted arriving at his master’s house after a day of work in a ship yard caulking ships and having to empty his pockets, even being subsequently searched, for wages paid at the ship yard, I was enraged. No human being should be forced to turn his wages over to another.

Anyone who fancies himself a supporter of liberty must read the autobiography of Frederick Douglass.
