DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A dissertation written by President Barack Obama's late mother is being published.

Duke University Press said Monday that an edited version of Ann Dunham's anthropological study about rural craftsmen in Indonesia is scheduled to reach stores this fall. Dunham completed the study three years before she died in 1995.

Duke marketing manager Emily Young said the foreword was written by the president's half-sister and Dunham's daughter, Maya Soetoro-Ng (so-TOR'-oh ING).

The book is based on Ann Dunham's 14 years of research among village workers on the Indonesian island of Java.

Based on Michelle’s Princeton thesis, I hope she is not the proof-reader.

Like most people, I’ve been waiting for another anthropological study of Indonesian rural craftsmen.
The ones I’ve been reading in recent years are so.....
lacking.

Well she did give him an Hawaiian COLB to forge on his website!

She was definitely born in INDONESIA, and she has an Hawaiian COLB.

Why her? Why now? What significance does it have? Duke is about to turn me off...if it is trying to cash in on zero’s fame.

Ann Dunham's anthropological study about rural craftsmen in Indonesia

Sounds like a real page turner. Lemme guess. Every DUmmy in the country buys a copy of this turkey and as her heir, Barry makes another mint off another book he didn't write. Starting to sound like a money laundering scheme.

...edited version...

Probably so heavily edited that Ann Dunham Obama Soetoro whatever herself wouldn't recognize it.

Will it discuss threeways with the craftsmen?

A lot of dissertations which get published as books sell only a few hundred copies, at best. This should do better—what self-respecting university or community college library will want to do without the book written by The One’s mother? Plus there are public libraries...and reading lists for anthropology courses. This could be an academic best seller.

It took her 14 years to do her dissertation research? Unlikely, as most programs have 10 yr done or out restrictions, and that usually includes getting the masters. Most members of my doctoral cohort finished in 4-4.5 years, but we all came in with masters. Fourteen years just seems too long.

Maybe the reporter is wrong (no surprise there), and the book is based on the dissertation with info from additional years after the dissertation was finalized?

Not sure that 1-year limit you mention always applied. I recall encountering hangers-on who were fixtures at universities as they claimed to be working on their doctorates, with stops and starts and this obstacle or that, sometimes part-time, for more than a decade.

...an edited version of Ann Dunham's anthropological study...

All the anti-American and commie stuff will have been redacted.

Just another chapter in Obama's mythology.

Not 1 year, 10 year. Long enough to become a fixture, and if you get few authorized leaves in between, yes, you could wind up a fixture, though who would want to live on a grad student stipend for 10 years is beyond me.
