>and its 300 million people are discovering that their hopes for continuous material improvement will never be met, could the U.S. be headed the way of the USSR?
IIRC, the USSR fumbled into economic oblivion [partially] because the economic powers had been tapped out and pumped into the market that crashed... IOW, Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, just in Russian and dealing with some other resource.
We’ve seen what happens after that, so why shouldn’t we be concerned that is where we’re going?
LOL!
I haven’t laughed as hard as did reading a The Zombie Survival Guide. Woman on plane next to me commented about how much I was enjoying the book.
"brand new black-and-white Nike athletic shoes"
Back to the store.
Was a very enjoyable book.
I’ve got my checklist.
I'm working strictly from memory.
That sure wasn't what I was hearing in the media. . .at least until Obama was elected.
I'm going to have to get a copy.
Rumors of a movie (starring Brad Pitt. bleh)
Just realize that when you finish it you’ll be looking at your own home and figuring out what your escape plans will be...LOL!
Yeah that seems like a big meh to me...
All you need to do is put in "Coldwar2" as a keyword, or China, or Russia/SovietUnion, or Iran, or Venezuela for that matter.
Interesting speculation, but a few factors that should have been discussed or discussed more prominently and a few disagreements:
First is to recognize that a decline in overall living standards is almost inevitable because American society, indoctrinated with liberal ideology, has already pre-spent a significant amount of national wealth on a few initiatives:
— the massive housing market distortion, in which to achieve political goals a vast number of homes that should never have been built or overbuilt were sold on debt to people who could not afford the homes. This market distortion has caused and will continue to cause a big hit to national wealth as the bad debt representing the overbuilt housing is bailed out to the banks or wealth is transfered to millions of homeowners to keep them in housing they could not otherwise afford.
— the huge year-after-year-after-year transfer of our national wealth to foreign nations that produce oil and gas because for political reasons America will not develop its own abundant energy resources or permit nuclear energy to be used on a widespread basis.
— the great burden on society by the importation of a very large population of uneducated, low-skilled, low-income immigrants primarily from Third World cultures. Because of the highly progressive structure of US tax rates, the immigrants require far greater government resources in schools, health care, criminal justice, etc., than they contribute in taxes. Perhaps an even greater burden that falls on lower middle-class and working poor Americans is the lowering of wages for American citizens in the labor market as a result of the downward pressure on wages. And contrary to the suggestion in the article, the return-home effect will be quite small because as America becomes increasingly socialistic, poor people will still be better off in America than, for example, in Mexico or El Salvador, even as the economy as a whole continues to decline.
— Much of the managerial, engineering and financial expertise of Americans has gone to assist foreign economies in developing themselves into a position to exploit the American market rather than to develop products and services that Americans can market to other countries.
The society in general and the government have managed to postpone some of the damaging effects of these factors by reducing savings and increasing debt.
However, without a dramatic political change, the American economic base will not be strengthening itself in the future to be able to both service the debt and provide capital for economic growth.
Contrary to the article, Obama will not be blamed by the majority of Americans for the economic decline. As the middle class, especially the lower middle class, bears the brunt of the economic decline, there will be a growing gap between an upper caste of wealthy Americans and the bulk of the population, which will be exploited by the Democrats and the mass media/entertainment/education complex to fuel class warfare and racial tension in order to continue to maintain a left-leaning regime in power, especially as amnesty brings a solid block of reliable socialist voters.
