The New York Times: First to be Nationalized or sold for Scrap?

The Wall Street Journal just featured a column speculating that control of the troubled New York Times may be acquired within the next couple of years.

That’s it! Abuse your shareholders by running those assets into the ground then sell off what’s left for scrap. Like most of the major media companies, they ran the company not to increase shareholder equity but rather to increase DNC equity. The New York Times is more of a 527 organization than a news organization. The scoundrels running the NY Times should be in a prison cell with John Rigas of Adelphia Communications for abuse of shareholder assets and a long lasting breach of fiduciary responsibilities.

Nevertheless, I expect that it is only a matter of time before..."

Oh, it'll be nationalized. Think of it: the "newspaper of record" that everyone must read to be considered well-informed, being even more of a mouthpiece for Obama... how can they let that opportunity go?

Agree! But it won’t look like nationalization.

Right now, the “crisis” of the death of print media and the hinted “government solution” will prevent many newspapers from criticizing Obama and his posse.

The Slimes can now come out from behind it’s facade of “All the News that Fits to Print” and be what it has always, in reality, been. A house organ for the Democratic Party.

I have a better suggestion: Sell the NYT to Proctor & Gamble to be recycled into bathroom tissue.

It's been like this for what, 40 years? 60?

It's not like investors didn't have a chance to bail.

The pathway to political power in the US is to dominate the press.

This is the only way that Berlusconi - the only non-left-winger in the world that is in power - managed to get control in Italy.

Why doesn’t some right wing extremist buy it?

They'll be turned into 501c(3) "educational" organizations. Surely their dependence upon government largesse won't influence their reporting anymore than PBS has been effected by it.

Correct. The administration who now controls our largest banks and financial institutions will order each to invest a pittance into the NY Slimes to keep it afloat.

The money will keep flowing in as long as Washington controls our banks and nobody will even know.

“Sell the NYT to Proctor & Gamble to be recycled into bathroom tissue.”

It is not even worthy of that. I know I wouldn’t subject any organ to that poison.

Not quite word-for-word what I was thinking, but frighteningly close...

How about we get someone in Congress to propose a TAX!

A TAX on NEWSPRINT!

Whereas the production of newspapers causes trees to be cut down, hauled by polluting trucks to polluting paper mills, and hauled from paper mills to publishers and

Whereas the production of newspapers requires toxic ink and solvents and energy wasting machinery and

Whereas the distribution of newspapers requires the use of dirty internal combustion engines and

Whereas a large portion of every landfill is used for discarded newspapers,

Therefore:

Be it resolved that a Newsprint tax, of $1,000.00 per pound, be charged to EVERY newspaper with a daily subscription, within the United States!
________________________________________
We should get some Republican to propose THIS as an amendment to any “cap and trade” or “carbon tax” proposal that comes up!
Maybe we can make it like “Cap and Trade” and use the revenue generated, from this tax on dirty dinosaur newspapers, to subsidize a tax credit for home computers and digital devices?
Or, we could use the money to subsidize talk radio! Well, those guys really don’t need any help!

At the current rate of decline, the NY Slimes won’t last a couple years — not even through the Presidency of 0bama.

A nationalized newspaper. We have become a banana republic for sure.

Nevertheless, I expect that it is only a matter of time before companies like The New York Times, Gannet, GE’s NBC and Time Warner’s CNN become the recipients of billions of our tax dollars. A cunning Marxist like our Hussein would not dare miss an opportunity to nationalize the news media.

True, but the government cannot force people to read or listen to what they say.

Even with government backing, they will still be hemorrhaging readers. They have lost so much credibility over the years, and now, they have succeeded in electing an administration that is proving to be totally incompetent. It's going to get worse for the NYT, bailout or no.
