“Strong and principled differences in philosophy do not require personal hatred and pettiness.”

My brother, have you been hiding in a cave? That sort of post can easily get you labelled a troll, RINO or heretic. The only Obamas who are not discussed with open hatred are the dog and the little girls and I have a feeling we will get around to them soon.

No period in American political history was ever dominated by more bitterness than the years of conflict and power transfer between John Adams’ Federalists and Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republicans. The conflicts over the Alien And Sedition Acts even reflect some battles of today. Yet despite the real political bitterness, Adams and Jefferson ended their lives as good friends again.

If President Reagan was still alive and well, I suspect he’d be pleased to dine with President Obama. It’s part of the long tradition of bipartisan civility that eases the workings of our republic. Strong and principled differences in philosophy do not require personal hatred and pettiness.

When is someone going to tell the demorats that???

I agree with you that personal hatreds soil the arguments and country. I believe that the friction that is common today is due to several factors. First Cable News that is updated minute by minute which can tend to drive the story rather then follow the story. As ratings drive the media, they are compelled to make every issue seem as if it is life-or-death. Second is the internet where we (me included) can vent our spleens in anonimity. I have, myself, said things on-line that I would never have said in person- a real lapse in character on my part.

This injures the efficacy of argument. The anti-war crowd really screwed up their argument and turned moderates the other way with all of their “hate Bush” talk. Similarly, I believe that our side was so constant and ruthless with hatred for Bill Clinton throughout his presidency that when the time finally came around that we had something on him, no one would listen. SOrt of a “crying wolf” scenario.

One can only wonder how much of Ronal Reagan’s good works were hammered out over a scotch with Tip O’Neil. The country ran smoother then.

The high road always pays off in the end. Especially when the other side wallows too much in the hog slop.

I believe much of that was caused by the immense popularity of Ronald Reagan practically throughout his entire presidency!
