Are Matt's books the ones about the Missouri Earthquake and resultant societal chaos? I read an excerpt last week that was fascinating but forgot to Bookmark it on FR.
The first one deals with a mini-war that breaks out between the BATFE and some gun owning patriots after "assault weapons" are banned following the massacre of maybe 20 or so at the Super Bowl and the resulting death of hundreds as they try to flee the stadium.
The second deals with what happens to Ranya Bardiwell, one of the main characters from the first, as she tries to recover her son who was taken from her at birth, while she was in "preventive detention" as a potential terrorist. (Think Nappy's memo)
The books loosely follow the same story line, with a lot of characters unique to each book.

Gates (CG 51). Under direction of the Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England, all U.S. Navy ships will fly the “Navy Jack” in place of the “Union Jack” for the duration of the war on terrorism. The “Navy Jack” is a flag consisting of a rattlesnake superimposed across thirteen horizontal alternating red and white stripes, with the motto, “Don’t Tread on Me.” Gates is undergoing a maintenance availability at Naval Station Pascagoula. Before 9-11-02, but after 1980, it was only flown over the commissioned ship in active status with the most time in active status. (The actual "first Jack" probably did not have the snake.. but what they heck, they do now.. until The One finds out about it anyway).
