Here is a real Rara Avis: a liberal newspaper from San Diego publishing an impartial , unbiased and well researched article on guns and the California UOC (Unloaded Open Carry) movement. Kudos to every participant in the interview and kudos to Miss Rosa Jurjevic, she proved herself to be is a great gal and an honest journalist.

Now, why don't we have the same honest and impartial type of journalism practiced at LA/NY Times, CNN, CBS and the rest of the major media outlets? Is it that hard for the big name newspaper editorialists and TV anchors to do a little research on this issue, leave their fears and personal bias aside and write objective articles based on real information, not anti-gun propaganda?

I fail to see the point of Unloaded Open Carry. Why not just carry a brick? It will do about as much good.

I wonder if it would be OK to carry with the slide back, thumb on the slide release, and a magazine in the other hand?

If it’s unloaded, why tell anyone that?

That was my first impression also. My second impression was Barney Fife. Do we get to keep one round in our pocket?

“I’m going to have to do a 12031(e) inspection on you and get out of your hair,” the cop says.

“Are you requesting or demanding?” Nate asks.

“I’m sorry?” asks the cop.

“Are you requesting or demanding?” Nate repeats.

The cop looks at him.

“Well, I’ll start with a request, but then I’ll demand,” he replies.

“As long as you’re demanding,” says Nate.

The cop starts with Sean.

He has him face the opposite direction and goes around behind him, removing Sean’s gun. He checks for ammunition and, finding none, places the gun back in its holster.

The cop makes his way around the table. Each of the trio stands and, when asked to be checked, pipes up with “Requesting or demanding?”

When the cop gets to me, I gulp, even though I know my line.

“You, ma’am, are carrying as well?” he asks.

I nod, then jump right in.

“Requesting or demanding?” I ask.

“Requesting and then I’ll be demanding,” comes the reply.

I stand, watching as he removes the gun from my hip. I can hear the revolver’s wheel turning as he checks the chamber for bullets. Then he hands it back to me — the first time I’ve handled a real handgun — and I slide it, if somewhat amateurishly, into the holster.

“Okay,” the cop says. “I appreciate your cooperation.”

Can anyone imagine how reporters would react if they had to jump though these kinds of hoops to exercise their first amendment rights? PING

"Before Nate can answer, the man continues.

“There are surfers at the beach looking to party, and you show up with that? That’s not right. Love life! Be mellow!”"

Who was this guy? Tommy Chong? I thought by now that all of the beatnicks/hippies had either semi grown up or were dead. I guess I was wrong. California, land of the fruits, nuts and flakes...

I pulled more of the article than I thought I had - if it’s too much could you shorten it?

Why not just carry a brick?

Bricks kill people.

From the article:
"The nuances of gun laws in California, I find, are difficult. For example, concealed carrying is not legal in San Diego (and all of California) without a permit — that much is abundantly clear — and neither is carrying a loaded gun. Having ammunition situated next to a firearm, however, does not amount to “loaded,” meaning that Nate, Sean, and Sam can carry full magazines on their belts."
Try loading a brick sometime! ;o)

Part of it is asserting our God given right to defend ourselves.

And part of 'De-sensitize' the general public to the sight of, OHHH NO!! Guns out in public.

Be veeeeery careful with that theory. In many jurisdictions, having both within arm’s reach constitutes “loaded” (as it only takes a couple seconds to achieve that state).

If you carry unloaded, might I suggest a chocolate Pistol, because it will make it easier to eat when the perp takes it away from you. Unlike Barney, he not only have the one bullet but a full magazine in his Pistol.

Apparently not in California, at least according to the article.
It mentioned they had clips on their belts prior to the officers verifying their pistols were not loaded.
I’d have a hard time believing they didn’t notice the ammo.

Just raising awareness for those unaware of strange definitions in other jurisdictions of obvious terms.

Good point.
I’d hope an individual would consult with local experts regarding the laws specific to their state before attempting this.

The article is about California, specifically San Diego.

When you read the article, you will note an emphasis on knowing the relevant laws.

Why do you consider it a theory?

MMMMM.. chocolate.....

Anyways, I realize carrying an unloaded weapon is silly, and even if you carry a full mag in another pocket, it still takes time to load it up in an emergency.

Nevertheless, I look at anything that gets ‘the public’ more accepting of guns as a good thing.

In an emergency, I would rather spend 5 seconds loading a gun than 15 minutes waiting for the police.
As an added bonus, I’m sure the law drives liberals and hippies insane. ;o)
