This reflects the abject terror being felt by the Inside-the-Beltway crowd on both the left and the right. Palin is a genuine populist - not as the word has been used lately to describe someone who panders to middle-class working people in order to buy their votes, but, instead she appeals to us because, unlike the Bernsteins of the world, she really is one of us. She reflects the disgust felt by average Americans toward government in particular and the culture in general.

The Inside-the-Beltwayers know that it's leaders like her who can upset their gov/media/lobbying symbiotic way of life by appealing directly to the only people who still harbor truly American ideals - the middle class - and they are shaking in their boots.
