"60 Minutes" Reports on Murder Charge Against Drunk Driver Who Killed 7 Year-Old - Video 8/2/09

Here is video from CBS News' "60 Minutes" last night where they took a hard look at the need for much harsher penalties against DWI offenses. It focuses on a family who were hit head-on by a drunk-driver, with their 7 year-old daughter killed.

The report shows dramatic video of a dash-cam inside the limousine the family was in. You can see the drunk driver's vehicle coming right at the limo and then the crash takes place.

The report then deals with the prosecutor in the case seeking a charge of "murder by depraved indifference" against the young man who had driven drunk despite being told by friends not to drive. . . . . . . . . . (Watch Video)

Tragedy. However, so many Americans drink...no one really cares.

You got that right. I am on a Safety committee at work. During a meeting we got into a discussion about drivers on cell phones. I contacted the State Police and they were very willing to come to our location and give a demonstration and talk. However, part of the discussion also included drunk driving. As soon as that was brought up, no one on the committee was interested anymore. No one wants to hear about what they do on a daily basis.

Exactly. That is the reason almost no one is interested in fixing much of anything. The sins of the government are the sins of the people. The administration lies, well...so do the people. The administration puts out false gossip, well...so do the people. The administration is immoral, well...so are the people. The administration hates those who are God-fearing and trying to do what is right, well...so do the people. Then, people wonder why they have bad government. Government is always a reflection of those governed. The problem is not solvable without a complete moral restoration. Something in which almost no one is interested. All that is left is for the Godly to sit and watch it all fall over the edge.

Every sober person in America knows and understands the law and the potential for violent consequences from drunk driving, but will still get behind the wheel anyway.

Try walking into a mall and waving around a loaded pistol or pointing it at people in a crowd and see what happens; yet that's basically what a drunk driver does.

Ditto for those who are texting and driving at the same time.

Knowingly and willingly putting the lives of others at risk, with no regards to the outcome. Gross disregard for human life.

Ignorant, selfish, reckless, irresponsible, potential killers.

Don't drink and drive--We're pro-life.

"murder by depraved indifference"

This should be the charge for any drunken/doped-up idiot driver who takes an innocent life. It's no more of an accident than if the perpetrator were to wave a loaded gun around firing randomly into a crowd. Charges should also be increased to mandatory prison time for those that maim, disable, and permanently disfigure the innocent as well. Better yet, inflict them with the same as they inflicted upon the innocent.

they took a hard look at the need for much harsher penalties against DWI offenses.

That is subtly misleading. It seemed to me the story was about the need for harsher penalties for people who actually kill people while drunk driving, not DWI offenses in general.

One problem that I see with the DUI/DWI laws is that they are focused on blood-alcohol levels rather than impaired driving. Then, once a state has the law on the books that defines DUI/DWI as a particular number, the government begins to reduce that number to increase revenue.

I believe that this is a big reason why people become indifferent. When the level becomes equal to having one drink, who can take it seriously?

Let the police focus on impaired drivers (for whatever reason: alcohol, drugs (prescription or illegal), or physical ability rather than on some arbitrary number.

You are right. Those words should be “recalibrated” to be more clear, to follow Dear Leader’s example.

Drunk drivers killing children is always a heart breaking story and the commercials shown on TV only cause more pain because the people who drink and drive and don’t care about anything else but themselves aren’t watching and may just (sociopathically) get a big laugh out of it. When good people hear of drunk drivers killing children, it cuts them to the heart.

This is one of reasons why I would rather be around a smoker than a drinker any day!
