Last fall I took my daughter to school one morning to find one of her 1st grade classmates wearing an Obama hat. For some reason I felt angry and annoyed that a parent sent his child to school advertising for a political candidate. What’s the big deal you ask? It took me a while to figure out why I responded to this child’s hat in this way.

Just who do you propose teach someone's children, if not the parents?
Whose responsibility does it then become?
That's the start of a slippery slope. Before you know it, *someone* is going to have to be deciding and approving what parents can teach their child about anything.
Wrong.
Passing on to your own children your own values is not abuse of parental authority, regardless of whether some stranger agrees with it or not. Thought control and intruding into parental rights is a liberal position.

When you post your content here and don't otherwise participate (as it was with your first two posts) it appears, y'know, that you're just pimpin' your blog.
Posting content here from one's own blog seems to be OK if done in a not so blatant way. We have more than a few FReepers who do that, but if you do it just for the sake of baiting hits for the money, you'll likely become ground meat.
It takes a village indeed. No, sorry. Influence over one's own kids is a sort of PROPERTY of the parents, be it religious, political, or otherwise. Others from outside that family may not like it but the parents OWN that prerogative and NOBODY has the right to take it away just (and perhaps especially) because the kids happen to be attending a government school.
I remember in 5th. grade doing a lot of rooting for Nixon (and I think even then I understood a bit of the cynical tone, that it had a lot to do with NOT letting Humphrey in). I learned early, vote for a Democrat and be damned, and in 51 years I haven't strayed from that good advice.
Of course, if that something happens to be an alcoholic beverage, then the sting might not last as long...or be as noticeable.

A young woman teacher explains to her class of children that she is a Democrat. She asks her class if they are Democrats too.
Not really knowing what Democrats are but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like fleshy fireworks. There is, however, one exception. A girl named Sara who has not gone along with the crowd.
The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different.
“Because I’m not a Democrat.”
“Then,” asks the teacher, “what are you?”
“I’m a Republican.”
The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Sara why she is a Republican.
“Well, I was brought up knowing and loving my country. My Mom is a Republican, and my dad is a Republican, so I am a Republican.”
The teacher is now angry. “That’s no reason,” she says loudly. “What if your Mom was a moron and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?”
A pause and a smile. “Then,” says Sara, “I’d be a Democrat.”
Oh, we do too.

You respond with: I believe your argument would have standing if The One wasn’t in office. But Obama is in Office. I do not see this as normal politics. This is politics taken to a different level. Not to be mistaken as being taken the “next” level. This is just a level where we have not seen or experienced in this nation.
You respond with a very poor understanding of parental rights if this is what you'd like others to think passes as your reasoned opinion. Our rights as parents are not dependent on who is president or how much you like them. It has nothing to do with whether or not you see it as "normal politics" or not. Since it isn't your child, you have no right to have your opinion considered at all.
See, my children are not yours to raise. The kid with a hat is not yours to raise. Your kids are not mine to raise, which is why I don't care how you dress them, what church you take them too, or what you feed them.

That is complete and utter garbage. Parents can send their child to any school they can afford and teach them anything they like. And honestly, if you're so concerned with this "takeover" of parental rights, why are you arguing to take away a parent's right to dress their child as they like?
You seem very quick to jump on the "abuse" bandwagon, using the weaker-than-weak excuse that that this president is different. He may be different, but it still isn't "abuse".
Child abuse is punishable in the criminal court by jail time and in the family court by loss of the child. Beating a child is abuse. Starving a child is abuse. Sexually abusing a child is abuse. Abandoning a child is abuse. Neglecting a child is abuse. Putting a hat on a child is not abuse.
What, in your experience, tells you that it is morally and/or ethically correct to lead traffic away from this site using someone else's money, bandwidth and effort?
My sense of ethics tells me that that is really, really wrong. Why doesn't yours?
