How quickly we forget those almost 3,000 innocent Americans who were murdered by the Islamists.
Every American should view this video made by a New Yorker who lived through the attack:

This video has been viewed by millions and is now in the Smithsonian.
There are videos of the planes crashing into the buildings and victims jumping. There are pictures of many of those who lost their lives, and president Bushs aftermath speech set to the haunting background music, Only Time by Anya. Awesome.

... so ... the point is to remember/celebrate those who cleaned up the mess afterwards? Not to denigrate their service (NYFD etc.) ... someone seems to miss the point ...

Ya know, this fits in perfectly with their celebration-of-victimhood philosophy: people are dead and that's OK. "End of life counseling", "take the blue pill", "cash for clunkers" vehicle destruction, "cap-and-trade" suppression of energy use, etc. - encouraging and celebrating facilitators whose goal is to help the living come to grips with a degraded standard of living.

I have to admit I don’t QUITE understand the level of outrage here...seems to me some basic touchy feely stuff about volunteering or doing something generous with your time on 9/11.

I dont QUITE understand the level of outrage here... The level of outrage stems from the perception/expectation that the new formalities will amount to "Sh!t happens, let's applaud & imitate those who help you deal with it" as a complete replacement of "two thousand seven hundred people were killed in a surprise attack, let's remember them and affirm our commitment to making sure such never happens again".
Ignoring "2700 dead", "Let's Roll", and "Never Again" in favor of "be nice to someone" is outrageous. Given the philosophies of those pushing the new 9/11 memorial plan, it is reasonable to assume their goal IS suppression/desecration of the memories of the dead and the pursuit & termination of the perpetrators.

Yes, I agree with this, but I also don't see how the two are mutually exclusive. I don't see how encouraging "be nice to someone" is at the same time discouraging memorial and remembrance. "Do something nice or generous on 9/11" is, to me, about as non-controversial--even milquetoast--as can be. it is reasonable to assume their goal IS suppression/desecration of the memories of the dead and the pursuit & termination of the perpetrators. Even if it were true, there is nothing in the law as written which furthers such a cause. The Obama administration has no authority over my thoughts and feelings. And, actually, the one, lone, solitary thing that has marginally pleased me about this administration's decision making is the relative hawkishness on the Afghanistan war.

I also don't see how the two are mutually exclusive They aren't. There wouldn't be an issue if we expected a proportional addressing of both.
Thing is, we expect our leaders to make the "be nice" part overshadow, if not obliterate, the "remember" part.

I understand this skepticism, which is justified given what we know about their ideology. However, I think that is where it should be for now--skepticism, not outrage. Because, really, the idea itself as written is pretty harmless on its face.

We’ve seen enough of their ideology to assume the worst of their every proposal.
