Secessionist movement under way in Texas

Fiercely independent and thoroughly horrified at the blatantly unconstitutional explosion of federal tyranny into every aspect of our lives, Texans are set to march on the state capitol in droves on Saturday. They will be delivering a million-strong petition to their elected officials based on the 10th Amendment, demanding an immediate constitutional confrontation with Washington.

If they are turned away or their concerns inadequately addressed, organizer Gerry Donaldson says they "will be forced to call for a vote for secession." This will not be the last time a state openly defies Obama's treasonous war on the Constitution.

Donaldson, who runs his own Internet radio show, says they are "calling for an orderly process that will allow our federal government to fall back in line with the Constitution." He continued, "Either we will restore America, we will live in a Marxist dictatorship, or we will secede and start over again."

I think part of the reason America is in their current predicament is "one man, one vote". It's a good premise until the freeloader class figures out they can keep voting freebies to themselves by electing irresponsible demagogues who demand spending money we don't have.

I agree, Spktyr, that America's government, as it has evolved, has serious constitutional flaws that can never be undone. One of the ways I would change a New Texas is to change voting rights.

If you weren't living in Texas before the break, you can apply for citizenship but you can't vote for five years. That prevents itinerants from flooding in when they have no intention of staying. We may also have to enact a snowbird law for those living mostly up north except in winter.

The other thing I would suggest is weighting a person's vote based on whether they own land in Texas and whether they own a business in Texas. If you own neither, your vote still counts. But if you own land (including your homestead), your voting strength doubles. If you own a business, it also doubles. If you own both, it triples. This gives a greater say to those who have invested the most in Texas and are the least likely to leave. I might also extend this to soldiers who have served either in the Texas military or the U.S. military.

I know there will be some people who will have a problem with that but, if not enacted, Texas will doom itself to repeating Washington's mistake of becoming a freeloaderocracy. I want the vote to rest in the hands of the people who have committed to make Texas their home and demonstrated that with their time and investment. That's not a liberal-conservative thing. That's a stability thing.

I have you beat by a few years...ancestors settled in Texas in 1830. We lived there until 2005. Finally left due to the heat. Just got tired of two months of 100’s, rest of the time in summer 99’s. Also the property taxes and home owner’s insurance are pretty hefty for retirees.

It was hard to leave Texas, the people there are great but found good people here in the Ozarks of Missouri. We love it here and are not sorry we moved but politics in MO are iffy.

State is pretty evenly divided politically although our county is about 95% conservative. Doubtful the state would ever secede with Kansas City and St. Louis having lots of liberal votes!

Don’t know where your friends live, but those costs are ridiculous. .....I’ll divulge some personal data...

I live in the DFW area (right between Dallas and Fort Worth), which is one of the most expensive areas of the State. I do average billing for electric and only pay about $150 a month. I live in a 2500sf house, which is 25% larger than your friend’s. My homeowner’s insurance only costs $1200 a year. My auto insurance costs about $700 a year.

The biggest hit on my annual property tax billing is for the local ISD, followed by Hospital Dist. and County. Annually, I pay about $5400 in property tax.

Roughly, about 8% sales tax (each city has its own rate); no State income tax; State lottery revenue subsidizes schools.

I REALLY don’t want a torrent of liberals migrating to Texas and trying to remake this State into what they just escaped from due to their socialist views. Dallas, Austin and Houston are bad enough to have to suffer as cities in this Great State of Texas!

But this is NOT about slavery and I resent you trying to imply it is. That's the scare tactic of liberals that all secessionists want to reinstitute slavery or are the fantasy of gun nuts or tax evaders. That's the stereotype the liberals will use to try to defeat this.

No political movement is going to be entirely pure and without personal motives but my attraction this has nothing to do with the 1860s. I don't own a slave and I never intend to. I don't own a gun and I see no reason to unless forced into it. I've never made more than $40k a year so there's nothing financial in it for me.

I want a Texas that believes in freedom, capitalism and the fruits of a hard days' work, the way America used to be before an all-powerful and all-intrusive federal government decided to interfere.

I want a Texas where brown, black, yellow or white can achieve whatever they have the ability and the aptitude to do and to make a decent wage for a hard day's work. I am not for slavery and never will be.

I’m seriously considering looking for a job in Texas and relocating. I’m just so angry right now at our government. Pelosi and Reid are laughing stocks. Obama is a flat out marxist and yet the left still calls him a right leaning liberal. It angers me how foolish and evil the left is in this country.

Most democrats are nothing more than useful idiots of the ilk that Soros and internal far left anti american fools are using to tear down our country.

Secede I say, you’ll scare a lot of democrats away and attract a lot of people who truly understand and cherish freedom of the individual.

Robert Heinlein had an even better and simpler idea.

Only retired military (and retired long-term non-elected civil servants) would be allowed to vote. These being the only people who have demonstrated that they are willing and able to put the welfare of the country ahead of the welfare of their tribe, family, or selves.

This class would also be the only people allowed to be teachers, policemen, judges or elected officials among a few other ‘protected’ jobs.

Everyone else would be a resident or non-voting citizen.

Simpler yes, better no. Those are all people conditioned to getting a government paycheck. Who wants only government people voting on who runs the government?

Oh, and I can disprove his theory with two simple words.

John McCain.

Need more words?

Jack Murtha.

He himself said that the idea does not eliminate stupidity *but* that it would reduce the stupidity in the system.

1830! Yep, they beat us here.
FWIW, in our County and School Dist., we have a great propery tax exemption for those folks who are 65 and up. It works well for retirees.
As far as the heat goes, I can tolerate it better than the cold of more Northerly climes. At least I can stay in the AC if it gets too hot!
Our County voted against Obama 75%+. About 90% of the Whites voted against him and about 99% of the Blacks voted for him. Hmmmm. Do I detect a split there?
Anyway, we love it here and have no plans to move in the forseeable future.
Good luck in the Ozarks!

I should have left off the part of the quote about slavery, the part about the motives of the politicians who would exploit discontent and disorder is what I was meaning to present.

“In today’s times, Texas has the resources and the willpower to go it alone without Washington’s help or influence”

Other differences: Texas is now heavily populated, and have had four US Presidents since the war between the states.(that is 4 out of the last ten presidents)

All Texas taxes combined place them in the exact middle of the states.

If Texas decide to split, don't be surprised to see Blacks rioting in the largest cities in the Lone Star Republic.

Texas will have to be careful that it doesn't turn into a pariah that South Africa once was back in the '80s.

What do you think will be the turning point that will finally force Texas to secede?

Good. Then we're in general agreement. When Perry briefly mentioned secession to a tea party crowd last spring, the liberal reaction was accusations of wanting to bring back slavery, old west lawlessness, tax cheats, etc. so I am quite sensitive to that suggestion.

Any major change is going to have some winners and losers. It's inevitable. And any major change is going to also wind up with a few folks gaming the system to line their own pockets. But the gaming has gone on for years now under the present system too. Why do you think T. Boone Pickens was so hot to trot about weee-und?
