Charlie Cook Tells Chris Matthews Democrats are in Trouble - Video 9/4/09

Here is video of pollster and political analyst Charlie Cook telling MSNBC's Chris Matthews that things are not looking good for Democrats. He pointed to new polling that shows on "Party Identification," Democrats now have only a 5-point advantage over Republicans, 45%-40%. That's down from a 17-point margin in January, 52%-45%. Cook said Party ID is always a "lagging indicator," meaning things have really gone sour for Obama.

He also warned that Democrats face a real problem in next year's mid-term election because mid-terms are almost always dominated by older voters, whom Cook said Obama is weakest with.

Matthews and Cook also talked with the Washington Post's Anne Kornblut about the Obama "School Speech," which Matthews admitted was a fiasco because of the urging by Obama's people that children write about how they could "support President Obama."

They close with Obama's Speech on Health Care next Wednesday to a Joint Session of Congress. Matthews said this speech is the key moment of Obama's first term. If he cannot "unite his party" and pass something, Matthews said Republicans will run against him as having tried to get "death panels" and destroy Health Care.

Cook said several "swing Democrats" are planning not to attend the speech because they don't want to be seen in the chamber during the speech.

NOTE: This is the most rational I think I've ever seen Chris Matthews be. . . . (VIDEO)

The 17 point Party ID margin in January was 52%-35%. Typo in article above says 45%.

It is interesting that both Clinton and Bush had ONLY two instances there they spoke to a Joint Session of Congress ... in other cases that was over an 8 yeaar term.

This will be Obama’s second speech to a Joint Session of Congress.

If Chris Matthews was described as “rational” through a discussion such as this you must know that he’s seen internals and they’re even worse than what Zogby and Rasmussen have indicated.

I think that’s exactly right. He was much more sober and somber than I’ve seen him.

Could you possibly find a couple more fawning dems to report the news?

Did you catch Chrissie’s Feudian slip? He said “death squads” first instead of “death panels”!

Chrissy is easily rendered impotent ~ on the other hand he’s only rarely confronted with the evidence that he supports the Zombie Party.

"It is interesting that both Clinton and Bush had ONLY two instances there they spoke to a Joint Session of Congress ... in other cases that was over an 8 yeaar term."

Interestingly, the State of the Union address is actually a joint session of Congress, as well. It looks a little different because there are other invitees (the President is an invitee), including the Supremes, Cabinet members and the Joint Chiefs.

So, to be technically accurate, both W and Clinton delivered (I believe) eight SotU speeches to joint sessions, with each delivering an additional non-SotU speech to a joint session of Congress during their presidency.

WOW..I can’t believe the mood of Chris.

Drop him a note and remind him that he said Obama was born in Indonesia and he didn’t seem to have a problem with that idea...ahahhahahahaha

And this is with the full support of the msm outside of Fox news. If the media was just even in its support Barry’s support would be about 10%.

I’m trying to remember which pundit it was that quotes the two over 8 years each.

There's been plenty of them. I have heard several describe Bush and Clinton as each giving a speech to a joint session, clearly not realizing that the State of the Union addresses are given to joint sessions as well.

I can easily see not counting State of the Union as those are regular events. As opposed to special convening of Joint Sessions.

How many total? Do you know?

The rats are truly idiots. Getting opposition? Vilify the doubters!

When opposition ranks swell, vilify them some more.

When their ranks are overwhelming, wake up your leader, bring him back to town to spread some silver tongued lies.

When that doesn’t work, what do you think the rat response will be?
