U.S. auto sales likely fell in September back to the nearly three-decade lows of early 2009 without government incentives to spur buying, leaving in doubt the timing and pace of a recovery for the battered industry.
Nearly 700,000 new cars and trucks were bought by U.S. customers through the government "cash for clunkers" incentive program from late July through the first three weeks of August, a leap from recession-stunted sales earlier in 2009.

I believe it will be worse than pre-cash-for-clunkers.
What did they expect was going to happen? They were giving away free money. They stopped giving away free money. My dog could have figured out what was going to happen.
never saw this comin’ /s

I'm shocked, shocked that the only thing moving at a Goverment Motors lot is the new Chevy Tumbleweed.
Captain Obvious is pretty busy lately.
the EXCUSE you are going to hear repeated over and over is “No Inventory available!”.
As a Chevy Dealer freind told me Saturday, they have very little inventory, because he hasn’t been DUMB ENOUGH TO ORDER ANY going in to a Winter with a declining economy!!
He’s covering with much-more profitable late-model used, and Ex-Rental cars!
What’s one advantage to the Cash For Clunkers program? It got a lot of Obama bumper stickers off the streets.
Excellent!
The only thing I know for sure is that Govt Motors and FiatUSA will be around until Nov 2012. I suspect there will be a lot more taxpayer funds needed to make that happen.
Or as HRP used to say, that “giant sucking sound”.
Paging Larry Kudlow and his fellow “Cash for Clunkers conservatives”. Now we have fewer cars being sold and more debt.
Kudlow should just call his band of idiot fans, the Cash for Clunkers Conservative Party, or CCCP for short. The way Kudlow’s turning left he may as well adopt the old CCCP policies for that matter.
They have enough computer power to fly the Space Shuttle and contain many unneeded but government mandated systems that do little but add to the cost. ABS and tire pressure monitoring for example.
Why does a car need four O2 sensors, when two or maybe even one would do? Then there's the complex/top-secret ECM hocus pocus to go with them.
Cars used to weigh more AND get better mileage...too many pointy headed intellectuals and green weenie government morons involved in designing cars.
I believe that due to the Obama created recession, Americans are now finding that their cars last many years longer than they previously thought, and as a result they are now keeping them and doing their own repairs and maintainence.
Holden(GM subsidiary) maintains it has taken all necessary steps to weather the economic crisis. This includes cutting employee shifts and making pay cuts across the board. Holden also states it will be a future economic hub in local regions along with China and Korea, which is a relief and good news for the 6000 Holden employees.
