A Telling Quote on Slavery Reparations
Publius Forum ^ | 09/30/09 | Warner Todd Huston

If you want to know what the ultimate goal is of those that want reparations for the American slave trade, you have to look no farther than a telling quote that appeared in the Memphis Commercial Appeal on September 25.

For slavery reparation advocates, the ultimate desire is not contrition, no apology will do, no memorial statues or finger wagging in Congress is satisfactory. Nothing less than punitive sanctions against living Americans for an institution that is 150 years dead is what these people want.

The article in question details the efforts of Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen (D, Tenn.) who has been spearheading a resolution that would see Congress launching a commission that would study reparation proposals.

The quote in question comes from Detroit City Council member JoAnne Watson. She said that an apology is just the first step in the reparations process. (my bold)...

Really. We’ve been paying reparations under other names for decades, and I don’t like it. If they actually come out and try to force me to explicitly pay reparations, then all bets are off.

I think the Obamas are doing pretty well collecting on their reparations, after all, they BOTH flew over to Europe on separate jets at an exorbitant cost to the taxpayers. Meanwhile, their Congressional Black Caucus friends, czars, ACORN buddies, Chicago crooks, Detroit felons, etc. are rolling in the money they’ve stolen or are planning to steal/misuse from our country. And don’t forget their megarich celebrity friends (Oprah) and misguided generals (Colin Powell)who wield influence in their circles...

Capone was bad, but they’ve learned how he did stuff and taken it to another level. Our country is so screwed...

I agree, and would like to file a countersuit to recover those dollars, spent in welfare, jail/crime prevention, propoerty value lost to social engineering, drug rehab, civil rights lawsuits, school destruction - and whatever’s left (i suspect a negative balance) is paid along with a plane ticket out, since they hate this country so much that they would rip it apart with this most divisive of all actions.

No reparations without repatriation!

In my opinion, bringing slaves from Africa to this country was indeed the worst thing that has ever happened...now does that make me racist for saying that?

She said the second step is investigation, the third step is compensation and the fourth step is consequences for wrongdoing… “We are worth it,” Watson said. “We’re not begging. It’s ours.”

Maybe what we need is something akin to a Caucasian American class action law suit -- we're all racists anyway, so what more can they say?

All decent Americans could pack up and move out of the cities, leaving everything to those who seek reparations. Within 5 years those cities would be murderous cess pools of filth and destruction. No amount of money can change that.

Even an apology is wrong. How can you apologize for something you didn’t do? You can’t.

to pretend otherwise is moral obtuseness, IMO

Can black people go a single day without white money?

Right, look at the property values of all the vacant homes in Detroit right now. They could own that wasteland they’ve created for pennies on the dollar if they wanted it. I have a feeling though, that even they don’t want to own those homes and be on the hook for the property taxes.

I thought the north said they won the civil war that ultimately freed the slaves. I believe there are even some books that were written about it.

The descendants of slave owners want compensation for the uncompensated loss of their property? Good luck with that!

What's that you say, Eric Hoffer?

The sick in soul insist that it is humanity that is sick, and they are the surgeons to operate on it. They want to turn the world into a sickroom. And once they get humanity strapped to the operating table, they operate on it with an ax.

People unfit for freedom - who cannot do much with it - are hungry for power. The desire for freedom is an attribute of a "have" type of self. It says: leave me alone and I shall grow, learn, and realize my capacities. The desire for power is basically an attribute of a "have not" type of self.

The real "haves" are they who can acquire freedom, self-confidence, and even riches without depriving others of them. They acquire all of these by developing and applying their potentialities. On the other hand, the real "have nots" are they who cannot have aught except by depriving others of it. They can feel free only by diminishing the freedom of others, self-confident by spreading fear and dependence among others, and rich by making others poor.

I doubt if the oppressed ever fight for freedom. They fight for pride and for power -- power to oppress others. The oppressed want above all to imitate their oppressors; they want to retaliate.

To most of us nothing is so invisible as an unpleasant truth. Though it is held before our eyes, pushed under our noses, rammed down our throats -- we know it not.

Those who lack the capacity to achieve much in an atmosphere of freedom will clamor for power.

Unless a man has talents to make something of himself, freedom is an irksome burden. Of what avail is freedom to choose if the self be ineffectual? We join a mass movement to escape individual responsibility, or, in the words of the ardent young Nazi, "to be free from freedom".

To some, freedom means the opportunity to do what they want to do; to most it means not to do what they do not want to do. It is perhaps true that those who can grow will feel free under any condition.

My great-great-grandfather fought in the Union Army. My great-great-great uncle did so too, and left an arm on the field at Chickamauga. He now lies in Arlington. Another of my ancestors had a farm in Ohio that was a station on the Underground Railroad. Yet another of my ancestors was a himself a former African slave in Rhode Island and fought in the Revolutionary War. Nobody in my family ever owned a slave or fought for the Confederacy.

My debt is PAID IN FULL, even before you deduct the tens of thousands of tax dollars that over the years have been confiscated from me and handed out to idle descendants of slaves.

What these people want is the enslavement of the white man, probably for double the amount of time they claim to have been enslaved, 800 years, in other words.
Nevermind that such actions would make them equally guilty of the sin they claim they have suffered. Never mind that it reveals their own shameful greed.
Nothing will change until the African American churches and preachers have the courage to preach the truth, that they must forgive. The wrongs have been righted, what is left is the requirement that they forgive and forget. No excuses.

One will not find a more radical corrupt racist group of individuals as those that live in Memphis, Tennessee. I’m not talking about the non-diverse minority population that lives there either.

“power to oppress others”

This is the true motivation behind socialism/fascism/communism. It is not about equality or wealth redistribution, it is about power over others.

Like a poor person winning a huge state lottery, in a few years the “winner” is either poor again or dead from overindulgence. Reparations will not solve their collective problems, because they are also poor in spirit and other attributes that money will not solve or relieve.

Would’t it be better if they just gave each descendent of slaves a million dollars? There are about 15,000,000 of them. The treasury could just write each of them a check.

You're right. I am officially changing my position on reparations from (repatriation plus one year's avg income) to: We should give every single one a million dollars, one time only, in exchange for no future claims of racism. Here's the money, now shut up. The producers in this country will have ninety percent of the money back within a year.

Exactly, repatriation to the African country of their choice. “Welcome Home, Bro.”

They surrender their American citizenship and passport at the point of embarkation.

Very few would take the offer. Too easy to sit here and whine on somebody else’s effort.

I tell you what, if they wish to press the slavery reprorations, I believe that every Southerner whose properties were burnt, destroyed by war, all livestock taken and/or destroyed, all crops taken/or destroyed, civil judgments taken against the Federal Government for rape, beatings, and killings of people civilians of the South, and even the slaves themselves, for at that time they was considered as property.

There is one US Supreme Court case that would justify such a reporation: Lee Family vs. United States of America (1883); whereas the court finds that seizure of the estate of the Arlington was deemed illegal confication by the Government and its military....... The Lee Family has a choice to take the property back, call for every soldier be dug up and replaced, receive compansation.....or sell property to Government for I believe $200,000. With honor of their father, General Robert E. Lee CSA, they decided on the latter with the request that it would be the “Hallowed Ground.”

I ask everyone, what should each ancestoral Southerner should receive? You know, if our Government actually apologize for this, it just could start a true healing process.........But I doubt it.

Absolutely. After reparatrions are paid to the South for the injustices they suffered and the property they lost, then we can start talking about reparations to the descendants of former slaves. ::crickets::

Until then, only those who were actual slaves are entitled to reparations from those who actually enslaved them. Let those slaves and slaveholders step forward. ::more crickets::

IMHO, Part of reparations would be returning relatives of slaves back to what part of Africa they were taken from. That would be setting the record straight, right? Afterall a lot of them say they love the “motherland” so what better way to love it than returning back to the busom of thier mother.
I am just saying......

Liberia:

The American Colonization Society (in full: The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America) was the primary vehicle for proposals to return black Americans to greater freedom in Africa, and helped to found the colony of Liberia in 1821–22, as a place to send people who were formerly enslaved.[1][2] Liberia is situated on the coast of West Africa. From 1821 thousands of black Americans moved there from the United States, and during the next 20 years the colony continued to grow and establish economic stability. In 1847, the legislature of Liberia declared itself an independent state.
