Mr. President put the coffee down, coffee is for closers!

No wonder President Obama came away from Copenhagen empty-handed. Let's face it: the president doesn't have lots of experience in saying good things about the United States. The POTUS explained that he wanted the Olympics in Chicago because America needed to repair its image after what was going on during the past few years. In other words America sucks because of George Bush.

This transcript of a meeting before the Denmark disaster was released by the White House, after Chicago was eliminated.

One of the legacies I want to see coming out of Chicago 2016 hosting of the Games is a reminder that America at its best is open to the world. And as has already been indicated, we are putting the full force of the White House and the State Department to make sure that not only is this a successful Games, but that visitors from all around the world feel welcome and will come away with a sense of the incredible diversity of the American people.

And I'm very impressed with part of the presentation that we made matching up host families for the athletes who are going to be there, because, as I said, Chicago, we've got -- we've got everybody. This could be a meeting in Chicago, because we look like the world. And I think that over the last several years sometimes that fundamental truth about the United States has been lost. And one of the legacies, I think, of this Olympics Games in Chicago would be a restoration of that understanding of what the United States is all about, and the United States' recognition of how we are linked to the world.

One of the first things managers taught me when I entered Advertising Sales was you never put down your own product. Whether it was a right decision for him to have attended that meeting or not, the only purpose of him going to the IOC meeting was to be the closer, the heavy hitting Chief Salesman. But the President told the IOC that America's world image is the pits. Hell, if your closer doesn't have confidence in the product, why should the buyer have any confidence?

President Obama can't blame IOC politics for the loss, like David Axelrod tried to neither spin, nor can he blame his right wing radio boogey met Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. The only one President Obama can blame is himself. He gave the IOC a reason to say no.

What Obama doesn't understand is whether you are selling magazine ads, a city for the Olympics or a peace strategy, being liked may get you the meeting, but it will never get you the sale. The truth is as long as America is the leading country in the world; everyone is going to delight in knocking us off our mantle. Rush Limbaugh said on Friday:

"He doesn't realize that the hatred for this country has not abated, and there may be some love for him but certainly there's no respect for him. And there certainly isn't a lot of love. We're being governed by an imbecile, folks, this does not happen. This is why presidents don't go to these things. You never know. And, by the way, how much did they spend on the bribes? You take two airplanes over there and you can load a lot of bribes in them. I think we have a metaphor for weakness here."

In the end Chicago didn't get the Olympics because our "rainmaker" did not know how to close, which has implications way beyond the Olympics. When he announced he was dropping the land based missile defense shield, whether it worked or not was not the issue, a true closer would have realized that the only thing that matters is that the Russians thought it worked. If the POTUS was truly the countries international "rainmaker," he would have extracted a concession such as sanctions on Iran, as a quid pro quo for dropping the program.

There is a great movie scene from the movie Glengarry Glen Ross that most people involved in sales can recite verbatim. In the movie, Jack Lemmon is salesman, who gets up to get a cup of coffee during a sales meeting. The new Sales Manager (Alec Baldwin), screams at him "Put That Coffee Down!" Lemmon looks at him quizzically. Baldwin screams at him again, "Put That Coffee Down! ---Coffee is For Closers." Even more than coffee, foreign policy is for closers, and unfortunately for the future of the United States, the man running our foreign policy is not a closer.

If I see one more article about what a fashion plate Michelle is, my head will explode. I can’t figure who would think that is anything but dowdy.

F-ing Assholes! You lifted my posts without attribution. I seriously you know the rules of selling, you are writers, or were at one time.

Here is just one post about how to sell, and it predates your piece of crap writing, that you got paid for, FAGS!:

This is just one post, of mine and there were other, LOser!

http://freerepublic.com/focus/news/2353995/posts?page=15#15

Makes Conservatives look petty? Seriously?

Barry O. decided to be the first Present to lobby for the Olympics and did it as a bald face Piker for his home town.

You don’t go to make a sales pitch, in an environment over you have no control, leverage or real influence. Especially if you are the supposed President.

It robs you of good will and more importantly demonstrates an inability to negotiate. In order to negotiate you have to hold some serious cards and lay them down face up, with a hold back that implies some further benefit.

Further, you don’t sell your product, in this case the United States as being defective and say but our better days as a world community are ahead. Huh? No one brought up our faults.

Rule number one in sales: Put your best foot forward, demonstrate the positive points of your product and get consensus.

Rule number two: Equal stature. The United States is the greatest country in the world and most capable of delivering superior and world class venues that will strengthen and enhance the image of the Olympics.

Rule three: Demonstrate past success. The United states has successfully hosted the Olympics many time and they are still talked about as being in the true spirit of Olympic competition. More over, this success combined with American ingenuity is a real foundation for the experience of repeating a successful event and it is our desire to deliver a product of excellence that will provide a superior experience for athletes and spectators alike.

Rule number four: Always maintain control of the deal. Never show up to an auction, do round robins or answer an RFP unless you have a strong relation and solid position with your target prospect.

You are going to lose, waste time and look desperate. Every time.

Not my rule, just a fact and a universal rule. Don’t be a sucker to justify a predisposed position, that does not favor you.

Rule number five: This a biggy. People don’t really care about you. The only that matters to them is what is in it for me and what is your unique offering that is a superior benefit and advantage to, well, me.

Do not under any circumstances talk about your self. Ever!

Demonstrate your strengths to the people who have a vested interest in the outcome of your proposition and get a consensus.

That is a big one, get consensus from the prospect, that you understand their unique needs and have demonstrated your ability to fulfill that need.

This dummy broke five of 10 rules in negotiating and they were the most important rules.

It is not that he did some chamber of commerce work and that is seen as bad.

What is bad is being the first to do this and then breaking all the rules of negotiating and I mean all of them. Well, except I don’t think he actually insulted anyone. Then again, he did nothing for his team back home and did some real damage by again apologizing for his teams behavior and making that the foundation of a decision. Oh and I suppose he insulted the intelligence of the participants with his sycophantic and banal, self serving sermon. Again.

That is just the beginning and I could go on but this dip also demonstrated he is a fence post with a tie and knows little about the nuances of dealing with nation states and gaining consensus from other nation states for your position.

Rookie mistakes, that make him look like a guy out on his first deer hunt. For a person of his stature just unacceptable and demonstrates some real weaknesses.

Just wanted to let some steam. That is 4th time I have seen writers around the country basically say the same thing.

I don’t really believe they could intellectualize the selling process without being salesmen and training others on how to sell.

Their writing, especially that Edmund dork, “three rules of selling” followed some of my writings and are not even in the realm of their subjects.

Rant off.

I just now saw your post, first time. I think many of us who were in sales (me 40 years, retired) realize it was a "rookie" sales call he made over there. Obama broke another rule, none of us old timers even thought of ... he used a teleprompter to make his sales pitch. Geez Louise! Everybody knows when you see a guy using a teleprompter he is reading what "somebody else thinks." Can you imagine a salesman walking up to you and reading his "pitch" from a notepad? Why couldn't he for once just deliver something from the heart .. without the teleprompter.

But my point here is, if 1000 seasoned salesmen saw the video of Obama in Denmark, 990 of them would have posted what you posted. These are BASICS to salesmanship ...these were "rookie" mistakes. Were he my salesman, we'd have had a long "curbside chat" after the call so the mistakes would never have been made again. (or else!) This administration needs a salesman on their staff instead of all the ideologues they seem to have. The folks that created the presentation did so to "please the boss" with little or no thought about the "interest of the customer." Amazing.

One other thing: Zero spent a bunch of time talking about how important the games were for the US and why he wanted the games in Chicago. The buyer doesn’t give a flip about what the seller wants. Try selling something to someone and tell them you really want to make the sale cause you’ve only got two more to make this week and you want a long weekend.
“You’ve got to have the Olympics in Chicago, because it will make me look good. And if I look good, I look good. And nothing is more important to me than for me to look good. So let’s all get together and make me look good. Because if I don’t look good, I don’t look good, and I want to look good. So we all understand how important it is for me to look good.”

they can get a Salesman but with no goals, maybe that is the problem.

You have no direction so you just flail your arms around wildly.

This guy is the first Present to not use visuals(collateral to you and I) to illustrate his point.

Why? He has no point to make and will only speak about facts in an existential manner.

I, Me, Myself, my mom, my dad.

Dumbass. When in front of a prospect, WIFM.

They want to know “What In It For Me?”

Rant off.

Thanks for the recognition.
