Here is video of a raucous Town Hall Meeting at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, New York, where Democrat Congressman Steve Israel faced a skeptical crowd as he tried to make the case for the Democrats' Health Care Plan.
Israel was asked a simple question: "Why can't we just fix the part of health care that is broken, when what is needed is tort reform?"
The crowd went wild at the question! Rep. Israel then condescendingly tried to lecture the crowd about why tort reform is not a good thing! The crowd remained raucous throughout his attempted answer. . . . (VIDEO)

The Dems are using McAllen, Texas as an example of out of control medical costs. And this idiot, Israel, blames the tough tort reform in Texas. The real reason for these high costs is illegal immigration that plagues these hospitals in Texas.
I guaran-damn-tee you that if this thing gets passed, tort reform will come after the fact. The federal government always protects itself from legal liability. But for now, they need the trial lawyers on board.
What he doesn’t tell you is that McAllen, TX is in the Rio Grande valley, right on the US/Mexico border, and that it’s full of foreign nationals taking advantage of our generous system.

We are waiting for a candidate to announce in the NY - 2nd. A Republican candidate already announced in NY-1.
The 2nd district was formally Republican before Israel and we outnumber Democrats in registration. The only reason Israel won originally was because there were 2 different Conservative and Republican candidates back in 2000.
Frank Stalzer didn’t even try in 2008. There is no reason why we can’t beat Israel next year.
This is the sickening side of democracy. A roomful of stupid savages whooping it up for something they don’t understand. Yeah, you’re gonna fix healthcare by reducing what is less than 1/2 of 1% of total costs. We spend about 8 times more on bank overdraft fees then we do tort payouts.

No, thats not it. Dr. Gawande went there and wrote an article about the high costs. Most of it is doctor greed by ordering unnecessary costs to pad their pockets.

Apparently, the people want to rein in the ambulance-chasing scumbag lawyers and their “jackpot justice”. Sometimes gifts present themselves on golden platters to Republicans. Let’s see if, yet again, the Republicans turn up their noses and say, “No, thank you.”
Here’s the link. On page three of this article is a link to the “gawande” article. He went to McAllen and talked to the doctors himself. On page 29 is an exhibit which shows the medmal insurance premiums paid by year since 1975 and the related payouts. These numbers are from the insurance companies themselves.

This is probably the first time anyone has ever provided you with the actual numbers, so my question is, why haven’t any of the supporters of tort reform ever bothered to give people the actual dollar amount of this horrible scourge?

I seriously doubt that medical malpractice insurance costs a Doctor only 1/2 or 1% of a Doctor’s gross annual income, in fact I would bet on average, the monthly cost exceeds rent. Doctors order a lot of CYA tests to cover themselves against lawsuits.
Read the article. There is a difference between “defensive medicine” and tort reform. No one has good idea of how much defensive medicine costs because it is difficult to distinguish between panicky doctors and greedy doctors. For example, supposedly c-sections are being done because of a John Edwards law suit, but c-sections pay in excess of $5,000 more, not counting post op follow-up. So are some doctors doing a lot of them because they scairt, or because they get to make a bundle.

Tort reform does sometimes save doctors on medmal insurance, but not always. The article explains why. Some defensive medicine is certainly out of fear, but most IMHO, is for extra money. Look at the small amount of payouts on the chart. Is it likely that a few billion in payouts is driving maybe $200 in extra costs?
