ABC News: U.S. Preparing to Bomb Iran
Flopping Aces ^ | 10-7-09 | Scott Malensek

Posted on 10/07/2009 9:22:55 AM PDT by Starman417

"The Department has an Urgent Operational Need (UON) for the capability to strike hard and deeply buried targets in high threat environments. The MOP is the weapon of choice to meet the requirements of the UON." It further states that the request is endorsed by Pacific Command (which has responsibility over North Korea) and Central Command (which has responsibility over Iran).

Loose lips sink ships. Thanks alot DOD leaker and of course ABC. If it is repelled badly it will become Obama’s version of the Iran Rescue Mission.

The Iranian nuke sites are spread over 20 different locations and a mere bombing will not solve the problem. You need boots on the ground. But, of course, Bush knew that and laid the groundwork by surrounding Iran on two sides with American bases. Does anyone really think Obama would ever invade?

I would be shocked if we did. This president doesn’t have the you-know-what’s to go out on a limb like that. The left would eat him alive.

TOTAL B.S...! Obama do this? NOT IN A MILLION YEARS...!

The only people who believe he’d do this would be idiots.

This is like Bubba sending Apache’s to Kosovo —ALL FOR THE CAMERAS...!

Nevermind. While I am sure taking out Iran nuke sites is on their mind this in no way really indicates that. Afghanistan also needs more advanced bunker busters as well.

I doubt it to. Heck he can’t make a decision on sending troops to Afghanistan let alone bombing Iran. Heck he would have to get by Brzeninski shooting down our airplanes.

Does he think these bills will pass if he bombs Iran?

ABC trying to pump their boy's chest up for him. Sure the military has expressed a UON. That doesn't mean they'll ever be permitted to use it. If I were in the military planning biz I'd be screaming for the capability.

The chances that 0bama's boys will ever order this sort of strike are microscopic. They'd be shooting oil prices sky-high if they tried it in Iran (and the Russians and Huey Chavez would be dancing in the street) and they'd be handing the South Koreans a war if they tried it in North Korea. The latter is more likely but neither one is in the least likely at all.

For folks who pay attention to the news, this is NOT a recent action. While the most recent UON was indeed issued in early JULY of this year (meaning it was likely drafted early in the first quarter of ‘09) this MOP has been chasing funding for quite a while.

Obama, and his in-house news arm ABCNEWS must have a reason to speak about it now.

Read the following excerpt from globalsecurity.org regarding an UON dating back to October 2007:

“On 31 March 2006 Dr. James A. Tegnelia, the director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency told American Forces Press Service [AFPS] that the MOP is a test article meant to understand the design principles on which a country might build a weapon to counter hard targets. “We are not in the process to convince anybody to field a large earth penetrator,” he said. But the FY 2008 Global War on Terror Amendment of October 2007 stated [page 44-45] that “The Department requests $5.3 billion to procure equipment to replenish that consumed during combat and support operations in the theater. ... The Replenishment category also includes $0.3 billion for the development of specific technologies to improve the survivability of U.S. personnel and equipment. This includes funding for the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) for use on the B-2 bomber... “ On 23 October 2007, John M. Donnelly reported in Congressional Quarterly that the request includes “$88 million to modify B-2 bombers so they can drop a Massive Ordnance Penetrator” and that White House stated the request for money to modify bombers was in response to “an urgent operational need from theater commanders.”

Thats a shiny lie!

Wishful thinking.

Obama, by himself, would never bomb his brothers unless he was getting a bigger deal elsewhere.

With what? We're having enough problems finding enough troops to keep your two base countries from blowing up. What's left to invade Iran?

Is there a date or time stamp on this UON? If not I’d guess it’s a not time sensitve request for the weaponry needed to accomplish s task of destroying deeply protected targets. Those targets could be Iran, sections of the NW frontier in Pakistan, caves in Afghanistan, or sites in N Korea. This could just as easily be identified as a need to deploy a weapon to kill bin Laden as attack Iran.

UON - just going on record. Now the ball is in Ciceros court. It is beginning to feel more and more like "7 Days in May" around here.

Would anyone be surprised to see the Obamas deposed in a military coup shortly before a massive strike against a nuclear prepared Iran?

BS Headline.
Procuring and Testing new bunker busters does not mean we are preparing to attack anyone. Having more of them in our arsenal is a good thing, and thats what this procurement is all about.

You'd also have to completely militarize the Strait of Hormuz to keep Iran from choking off sea traffic through the Persian Gulf.

A chewy order in and of itself.

Iran has enough fissile material at this point to cause serious problems. Doesn’t matter if they can make a warhead or not. Unless we can guarantee that we know where 100% of it is, and could contain it to the attack site, we will not be conducting any bombing runs.

The time for action was 2-3 years ago.

In the interest of full information, while the link does reflect Flopping Aces’ headline:
ABC News: U.S. Preparing to Bomb Iran

the link to ABC itself has as headline:

Is the U.S. Preparing to Bomb Iran?
Is the U.S. Stepping Up Preparations for a Possible Attack on Iran's Nuclear Facilities?

An important difference. IOW, media speculation.

I’ve been in on simulation-backed wargaming of an invasion in Iran over the years. I assure you that Iran is much too large to invade, esp. under our current force structure and deployments.

However, we do still have the airpower and seapower to close or destroy all Iranian air- , sea- , and army-bases within about a 3-day air campaign, with minimum losses....

A one-location shot, such as Osirik in Iraq, was doable. I'm extremely skeptical that we can use air/sea power to take out large numbers of locations. Just recall a) Clinton's cruise missiles and the aspirin factory; b) the pre-invasion strike on Saddam that missed. And here, we're talking hardened targets, not soft above ground targets.

You would know better than I about an invasion, but history tells us you absolutely have to have boots on the ground with this many locations.

I agree with you on the subject of airpower taking out all possible nuclear locations. I suggest to you, though, that the actual number of locations with facilities capable of enriched uranium molding (or plutonium)and weaponization is small, perhaps 2 locations. Are they deep underground? Of course. Do we have the weapons to penetrate these and the skill to deliver them exactly? Of course. It is also hard to retaliate against anyone when your air force and navy have been decimated.

Ok, well, I base this on Congressman Curt Weldon's 2005 book, Countdown to Terror. I think he was on the intel or military subcommittee (I knew his staffer, who reaffirmed all this stuff). He has a map in the book with over 20 locations identified. If he is right, then we will need an invasion. If you are right, air power might do it. My faith in precision bombing, though, has been shaken by repeated misses in Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and not just on Saddam, but on his sons and others. How many times did we hit a target only to find that the person of interest had been gone for hours, or that it was the wrong target?

I'm less concerned about retaliation against the U.S. (even against our forces in the region) than I am that if we use air strikes, and come up short, a) they will be greatly emboldened and the regime supported; b) they will even more energetically spread their facilities out and harden them further, and c) probably have some indication who our intel sources on the ground are.

I also believe that there are over 20 different locations having to do with nuclear power and nuclear materials production. I don’t believe, and this is because of the speciality of weaponizing uranium and plutonium, that there would be more than about 2 such sites, maximum. You could move Saddam and his sons around, and the intelligence on the locations could be fleeting, but you can’t move these special facilities around. We know where they are and we know how penetrate them with weapons, exactly.

This is not to say that I am not an advocate of using ground (special) forces to seal the deal.
