Some things you may not know about Palin:

What A Fisherman Says About Sarah Palin by Dewie Whetsell, Alaskan Fisherman

As posted in comments on Greta Van Susteren’s article referencing the MoveOn.org ad about Sarah Palin.

The last 45 of my 66 years I’ve spent in a commercial fishing town in Alaska. I understand Alaska politics but never understood national politics well until this last year. Here’s the breaking point: Neither side of the Palin controversy gets it. It’s not about persona, style, rhetoric, it’s about doing things. Even Palin supporters never mention the things that I’m about to mention here.

1- Democrats forget when Palin was the Darling of the Democrats, because as soon as Palin took the Governor’s office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, Frank Murkowski, she tore into the Republican’s “Corrupt Bastards Club” (CBC) and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits. The Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and singing “la la la la” (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar. But while you’re thinking, I’ll continue.

2- Now with the CBC gone, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies here. So, she constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called “ACES”. Exxon (the biggest corporation in the world) protested and Sarah told them “don’t let the door hit you in the stern on your way out.” They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has done anything similar.

3- The other thing she did when she walked into the governor’s office is she got the list of State requests for federal funding for projects, known as “pork”. She went through the list, took 85% of them and placed them in the “when-hell-freezes-over” stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, we’ll pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governor’s jet because it was extravagant. Maybe she could use the money she saved by dismissing the governor’s cook (remarking that she could cook for her own family), giving back the State vehicle issued to her, maintaining that she already had a car, and dismissing her State provided security force (never mentioning-I imagine-that she’s packing heat herself). I’m still waiting to hear the names of those other governors.

4- Now, even with her much-ridiculed “gosh and golly” mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. No one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn’t impress you, then you’re trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand.

5- For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drilling at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn’t start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. This summer, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again.

6- President Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. Sarah went to the legislature and submitted her plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewable by 2025. We are already at 25%. I can give you more specifics about things done, as opposed to style and persona . Everybody wants to be cool, sound cool, look cool. But that’s just a cover-up. I’m still waiting to hear from liberals the names of other governors who can match what mine has done in two and a half years. I won’t be holding my breath.

By the way, she was content to return to AK after the national election and go to work, but the haters wouldn’t let her. Now these adolescent screechers are obviously not scuba divers..

And no one ever told them what happens when you continually jab and pester a barracuda. Without warning, it will spin around and tear your face off. Shoulda known better.

I am in the energy business and I support Sarah Palin.

Dewie Whetsell, Alaska

And the GOP knows this - she WILL clean house. That's why they want 'one of their own' - one that will not upset the apple cart. You want clean gov't, Sarah's the one. IF we make it to '12 - MrPeacePrize has other plans.

Good analysis. The less the party supports her now, the less she is beholden to them later, and the greater chance she has of throwing these statist clowns out on their behinds if she wins.

I see the hand of God in all this. McCain the maverick picks her because she's a maverick who crusaded against her own state GOP. Who else would have picked her? He gives her a platform to launch herself and her story into the political stratosphere, where she eclipses the candidate himself and becomes an instant draw. She's now got an army of eager voters at her back without significant support from the party machine--which is unprecedented and miraculous. She can run as an outsider amidst what looks to be a white-hot anti-party, anti-incumbent mood among the voters. And if she wins, she is beholden to none of the party hacks and has a great opportunity to throw the careerists out and replace them with a better crop of leadership.

..... It strikes me that the only thing Sarah Palin needs to win is (a) funding, and (b) an honest public media platform. But IMO she needs to start NOW putting that in place if she really wants to make a viable run in 2012.

Another suspicion of mine is that, if she gets a fair media hearing, she will develop huge traction among women.

Finally, I would LOVE to see her energy-development approach applied to the US as a whole. Open up everything for drilling. After allowing for exploration and drilling costs, the energy firms pay the feds or the states (or both) a price per barrel equal to the going OPEC world price.

Chaos brings opportunity. Given the present state of our nation, I think that the right person in the right spot will be able to accomplish some very important reforms. Sarah Palin may be the right person.

I think your points are true. Sad part is, apart from hosts like Beck and Rush, I don't see her getting "honest public media" from many other sources, even the so-called conservative media.

I am not being critical of you when I say that I have known all of these facts since shortly after Sarah was nominated. The reason I knew about them is because I go out of my way to listen to talk radio and read sites such as FR on the internet.

I am being critical of the SRM who is TERRIFIED that the general public will learn the REAL truth about Sarah which will give them one more reason to abandon them. They have convinced the public that she is a backwoods, ignorant woman who was not qualified to be VP, much less POTUS.

I pray every day that she IS planning to run in 2012 and will win the nomination. We will see then if the SRM can hide the fact that she is the true heir to Ronald Reagan. I can only pray that America is not to far immersed in socialism by then to recognize it.

Sarah showed Big Oil and the “Corrupt Bastards Club” (CBC) who owns Alaska ... and her resources. She didn’t play their reindeer games!

Thanks you two. Having Alaskans here who know the real Sarah Palin is very fortunate and can be advantageous to countering the various lies and smears perpetrated upon her
We in the contiguous states, and Hawaii, look forward to 'borrowing' this grand lady for eight years.

Sheesh, here I thought that good ol’ Dewie was going to tell us stories about Sarah’s set-netting and battles with other set-netters, and so on. Like what was her best year, best price, the highest number of salmon caught in one season, who corked her and what was her response, ever have any problems with driftnetters? You know the inside scoop, the stories we’ve never heard.

Loved this! I did some research on Sarah, myself, not as inclusive as this...and thanks, by the way! I was THRILLED that McCain chose her. But then he misused her and I will never forgive him. I’d have voted INdependent party until he chose her...and she brought a lot to the ticket. He let us all down and let us all see what he really was...a jerk! So, Sarahcuda...we are still with you and you are looking good for 2012! Even if on an independent ticket! I hope the Republicans stick with you, but if not...we will find a way for you!

Alaska is the only state where the citizens own the rights to all of the natural resources in the state.

Alaska is a very different animal that’s for sure. However the biggest owner of land in Alaska is the Federal Gov’t at something around 65% depending upon which source you read. The State of Alaska owns the vast majority of the remainder with private ownership being a smaller amount. Alaska is basically a government owned land mass as opposed to other states where the individuals [non gov’t] owns the vast majority of the land mass. Alaska did pay something like $1200 annually to each citizen from royalties derived but I’m not sure what the figure is today.

Ya, it was a 300 year flood, but iceout on the Yukon is known to gouge everything out.

Palin really left an impression on the community, as they expected to see the average govt people; not somebody who really cared like Palin, no joke.

I just wish the world could see the Palin I have watched over the last dozen or so years;;; and not the person the media makes her out to be. I couldn't blame her if she said the heck with them all; after doing all the good she has done for all Alaskans over the years.

Something else: Palin won't ever burn her bridges to the repub party; she could have done so years back and still won the gov race up here. I do believe Palin will change the repub party which I believe has to occur with the changing demographics and problems facing our country. Sarah Palin always did what was right for the Alaskan People as governor. Often the good ole boy repub network hated her, tried destroying her, but she had the trust & faith of the people. Palin's insight & judgement always proved up in the end; like I said: the only political I would trust. I just hope the repubs in lower 48 have the sense to keep an open mind to her ideas. I watched Palin fund dem issues such as education, health care for kids, cost efficient in the long run;;; and the right thing to do. The repubs wanted to kill much of what she supported and she fought them tooth & nail; but in the end she won and the people's opinion of her went thru the roof. She also really made big cuts in wasteful spending, graft, and reeally went after the crooked repubs up here; put a bunch of them away in the big house.

The dems never hated her until she ran for VP. Just keep an open mind to her ideas, she's aa libitarian/conservative deep inside; quite a good tghing actually.
