I received some news from my doctor this week that, on the surface, is discouraging: I have been diagnosed with diabetes... No sympathy is requested. I got exactly what I deserved. Mea culpa.
So what does that have to do with saving the country? you ask.

You did not “deserve” diabetes. It is a disease. You have a responsibiilty to work on tough new behavioral patterns, But you are not guilty of wrong doing.
That being said, God bless and protect you.
Gerry, five years ago, I was exactly in your shoes. My first reaction to the Dr. was, “Man, I’ve blown a bunch of good genes,” because my parents lived into their 90s with nary a whiff of diabetes.
Then, I was so low I could dangle my legs off a cigarette paper.
I lucked out because my blood sugar was always stable. Started cutting fat outta my diet, exercise bike—larger muscle groups burn blood sugar faster—and two meds.
After 4 years, I’ve lost 85 pounds, and been off all meds for 8 months—and didn’t even know you could do that!
One big dietary help to me was ground turkey—both plain and turkey sausage. We use the plain for stew, patties (with turkey chili on top), and the sausage for pizzas (on low carb tortillas), omelettes of various kinds). Don’t feel like I’ve suffered at all, except for an occasional urge to run out in the front yard and scatch around for worms and bugs....
At any rate, like the guy said to his wife going out the door to the beauty shop, “Good luck to you!” but you probably stand a better chance of success!
One more thing: An veteran diabetic gave me some advice that turned out to be true. He said that I would start off as a carb and fat fanatic, but would learn to moderate as I learned what I could get away with. The first year, I had maybe one potato, and never any dessert. Now, I treat myself every once in a while, and my BS hangs right in there, even with NO meds. However, you may embrace fanaticism for the first year.
