...But last weeks episode marked a dramatic departure from the familiar, biased trope. After detective Bernard makes a few forceful pro-life points in an impromptu squad car debate with his partner, ADA Cutter jumps into the fray. He professes his pro-life views and refutes a condescending response from his pro-choice colleague (Rubirosa) by citing the turning tide of public opinion and mentioning that most Americans now consider themselves pro-life. Apparently Mr. Cutters been checking the latest Gallup stats. Rubirosa replies by pointedly referring to those who share Cutters views as anti-choice, at which point the reliably liberal District Attorney, Jack McCoy, mentions his own daughters change of heart on the issue. She was staunchly pro-choice, he explains, prior to seeing the image of her unborn child in an ultrasound. End of scene.
Jaw-dropping stuff.

The “glow” off abortion, Finally? I’m surprised.
Show’s no fun since Chris Noth left.
Chris Noth was on Criminal Intent, this particular episode was SVU
Heh.
I remember the ep that pretty much ended my L&O viewing. It was L&O: SVU — the storyline was about some guy killing pregnant women. The snotty blond D.A. was worried about prosecuting him for the “fetal deaths” because she didn’t want to “set women’s reproductive rights back 100 years.” The supposedly Catholic, pro-life Detective Stabler made the comment that “abortion is different, that’s a woman’s choice.”
Thanks, NBC, I’ve had enough!
Double WOW WOW
Chris Noth was on The Original, no initials, show, when my current teenagers were babies!
I happened to see this episode and my husband and I were sitting there stunned - waiting for the “but” comment...it never came. They really, truly said Roe v Wade hadn’t been reviewed since it was passed and too many new medical procedures and life saving measures were available now that weren’t available then. Yes completely stunning show.
Like your tag next your name. :)
He was a damn good actor too. Unfortunately Law and Order has gone really far left. I have been a fan of all of the Law and Orders since the beginning, now its getting much harder to watch
Thanks! I agree with yours!
Sometimes Hollywood can surprise you. One of the early House episodes depicted House pushing a patient towards abortion until the surgery scene which duplicated the well-known picture of the unborn child’s hand reaching out of the womb to grasp House’s thumb! House was visibly shaken.
Yeah, I stopped watching a long time ago because of the Bush bashing. It was starting to fade anyway, IMO. Maybe they read their demographic and figured out they should turn to the right.
Technology ended it for me: back when we had cable, I watched it in everlasting reruns on A&E. 1997-99? Tom would predictably fall asleep during the theme song, and he’s 13 now. Eventually, we started getting shows on DVD, and now we’ve got a Netflix-streaming-beeber, and I’m catching up on the 80s, commercial-free.
Even in the 90s, though, you had to grit your teeth on a certain level of annoying leftism. It was worth it for Chris Noth, Michael Moriarty, and then Sam Waterston. His character annoyed me, but he has such perfect diction!
I found SVU to be very informative . . . after watching a couple of episodes I’d no doubt as to how fast the left would turn into fascists once they had the power.
Just did see it myself on my Tivo. At first, it sounded like the typical crazy pro-lifers and the reasonable pro-choicers, and I stopped paying too much attention. I was stunned by the time the show ended.
Actually the most damaging dialogue came when Cutter compared anti abortion advocates to abolitionists. That’s the comparison that truly terrifies the pro abortion elements. Interestingly NY Archbishop Tim Dolan began the process of making this case by accepting the responsibility of the Church’s failure to join the fight against slavery in America. He continued by saying that Catholics in the future would not have that shame when it came to defending life.
Between that and all the laughably predictable “guns are evil” eps, DH & I pretty much tuned out. Too bad, because it really was a great show at the beginning — terrific writing & acting.
LOL!
Blessed are the blind squirrels.
Everyone has her personal interests. Grammar and diction are mine!
And I have a soft spot for him since he was Nick Carraway in “The Great Gatsby.”
his character, Mike Logan--total self-righteous lib...
he was an original cast member of Law and Order... way back in the early 90s...
It was - I agree! I was a big fan for a long time. (loved Lennie and Michael Moriarity)
this is why i loved the show, "Frasier." my two boys speak a lot like Frasier and Niles... (but they like sports, too)...

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
Smart move on their part. Not exactly good for ratings to lose nearly half the country.
However, I’m still not going to watch the show. I am not at all impressed by legal “heroes” who don’t give a damn about protecting the weak and helpless. Dr. Gregory House is a saint compared to these scummy characters.
It’s funny how the libs these days need to pound their politics home. One of my favorite shows of all time is MASH. I know, I know, it’s just an anti-military, anti-war, peacenik’s mockery of Vietnam.... but still... one of the best-written shows of all time. And funny as hell. It’s not a show where you “get” all the politics, though they’re there, you know what I mean? I can disagree with some of the messages but still completely enjoy the show. Not true with most shows today.
“Sometimes Hollywood can surprise you. One of the early House episodes depicted House pushing a patient towards abortion until the surgery scene which duplicated the well-known picture of the unborn childs hand reaching out of the womb to grasp Houses thumb! House was visibly shaken.”
Wow! I’m going to check out that episode.
Uh, that wasn’t Vietnam.
The show takes place in Korea, but it was meant to be a commentary on the Vietnam war.
Ultrasound destroys the Choice lie.
Pray for America
Interesting. I didn’t know that.
That was a great character.
Have you seen the original movie? The Vietnam angle seems a little more obvious there.
Right. MASH was funny, clever, brilliantly written. Even though the dufus was supposed to be the conservative one, it wasn’t offensive. I think the writing for most of these shows is so juvenile - I doubt the writers are capable of anything like MASH these days. I’ve been watching reruns of Frasier - they’re witty and sharp and NONPOLITICAL! But I think those days are over. sigh.
Chris Noth was good on L&O as well as L&O:CI. But I think Jerry Orbach was at his best as Lenny Briscoe and made for good shows.
Didn’t see last week, however this scene sounds like real life. I have know several who did exactly the same thing as the DA’s daughter.

That's what I thought when I saw the episode, too. The episode is called "Dignity".
What I also liked about the episode was how in spite of Rubirosa's privately defending pro-choice, she still gave the defense that pro-life ammo in the form of that nurse's testimony. And her admittedly pro-life boss tried to bury that pro-life testimony because it wasn't good for his case. It was excellent drama, as people's real life behavior doesn't always match their words & private convictions.
McCoy made an excellent point at the end re expecting that "you'd think that those who defend civil rights would be pro-life, but they most often aren't".
I love Law & Order and always have. I like hearing ALL sides of a debate, especially on tough issues. Personally, I think that this is shaping up to be one of their best years. PS Sorry I am late to the party on this thread. I just found it thanks to "Servant of the Cross"
