NY-23: How Sarah Palin Stands to Win (and Charlie Crist Stands to Lose)
Politics Daily ^ | 11-03-09 | Matt Lewis

Posted on 11/03/2009 4:27:24 AM PST by euram

Much has been made over the special election in New York's 23rd Congressional District. For some, the attention might seem a bit much, given that it is merely one of 435 House seats.

In reality, this race is about much more than one House seat.

It is a proxy battle in the long-running war between establishment Republicans and grassroots conservatives. Although GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava endorsed the Democrat over Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, after quitting the race with three days to go, Hoffman looks poised to win

“Sarah Palin’s surprise endorsement of Hoffman...”

Why don’t they just say “inexplicable endorsement of Hoffman”, like they about her ‘inexplicable’ decision to resign as governor.

It’s getting laughable.

If Hoffman ends up winning, then Gingrich’s 2012 aspirations are in serious trouble. He took the easy road and chose party over ideology- establishment over substance. In the end the RINO he backed quit the race and endorsed the Democrat.

Gingrich never had a chance for 2012 to begin with.

And people think Palin has “media baggage”!

The MSM thought they could attacker her and make life hell via pointless “oops” uncorroberated stories, or anything like that.

The country club political parties probably get PAID to have someone be a candidate. When “little” unwashed masses start to defy the plantation owners, well the country club gets nervous.

Don't matter if Hoffman wins or not. Gingrich is finished.

I’m not familiar with Politics Daily. This article doesn’t sound so bad. The others, however, are written by columnists who —most of them— are alumnae of NYT. One of them even dedicated her columns on ‘issues’ related to... Michele 0bama. Despite saying that “We’ll offer a mix of straight news and opinion — and a mix of views in our reported commentary,” they have only one columnist that is billed as ‘a conservative writer’. None of the rest has any label. We know why.

Too many people don’t like Crist.

He does not create friends, only political alliances.

Gingrich’s 2012 aspirations................... he can aspire all he wants, he isn’t going anywhere. He’s pretty much washed up politically. Give him a TV show like Huckabee.

The REPUBLICAN Party has to figure out that its purpose is to support REPUBLICAN principals, rather than people like Scarface in New York that happen to have an “R” next to their name. It was DEEPLY INSULTING to conservatives when President Bush when to Rhode Island and supported Lincoln Chaffee for re-election, and the party spent millions on him, when he to the left of half of the DEMOCRATS in the Senate.

And this problem is VERY EASY to solve. There are organizations all over the place that rate candidates. The biggest one for conservatives is the ACU, the American Conservative Union. They give every candidate a score. All the party has to do is set a minimum score...maybe 65% if the candidate is in a blue state, maybe 85% if a red state. That simple - if you cannot score those numbers, based on your voting record - fine, you can run as a Republican, but you’re on your own for financing and other help.

Conservatives who give money to the REPUBLICAN Party expect it to be spent on people who uphold at least some minimal standard of conservatism...not on double agents. This New York fiasco is going to cost the party many, many, millions in lost donations from angry conservatives...I REALLY hope that the party will re-think its standards - as they are still the only thing between us and an Obama dictatorship.

The leftist leadership in the republican party is the problem and until that is rectified the problems will continue. We must have them run out of town on a rail and have true conservative leadership in place.

Many of my political views are closer to Crist’s than Rubio’s but Crist is a snake and I ould not vote for him if there was a better person out there. Rubio would have my vote if I lived in Florida because you know exactly what you are getting. Crist can go suck an egg!

Rubio also came out publicly for Hoffman - he had a great article on NRO.

look for the “former Guiliani ...”

and “former McCain...”

talking heads to start appearing.

This is their job interviews for 2010 and to justify the existence of RINOs.

"The establishment has now learned it can be beaten from within its own base . . . If the GOP wants to fight the base in California and Florida, game on."

He added, rhetorically: "Do they want that?"

Apparently so. They chose Palin as a means of bringing conservatives out to vote; now they're still trying to figure out why we (and she) didn't go home and shut up. That's how it's supposed to work, right?

He might have hit a homerun but it went foul. I was channel surfing this morning and came upton Morning Joe and T-Paw was on. Chuck Todd ask a basic question “What are the basic requirements to be a conservative and/or a Republican” T-Paw fumbled and mumbled his answer. He couldn’t express the conservative ideals with clarity at all. It was brutal to see and hear.

What are the basic requirements to be a conservative and/or a Republican

That one is too easy. To a conservative, it is not just wrong but socially destructive for the government to do something for an individual that he can and should do for himself.

Medicare for uninsurable elderly people: good.

Health care for able bodied 25-year olds who could buy a good policy for the price of the plasma TV they bought instead: bad.

Disability support for cripples or lunatics: good

General welfare for lazy able-bodied young men: bad.

National defense: Good

Outlawing armed self-defense in favor of a professional police force: bad

...etc.

I think Gingrich was DOA, but now that he has designated himself a JUANnabie by his actions, he's a roadkill zombie.

That's a shame, too. I used to like him. When someone puts party over country it really gets on my nerves. And then he starts lecturing us about it. I think he's going to see all his support for his organizations dry up now.

Paw-Paw is, at best, a RINO and at worst just another liberal masquerading as a Repub. A real conservative can easily define what we believe.

Medicare for uninsurable elderly people: good.

Only if it is set up such that nobody who had a choice would want to be on it. The same requirement must apply to all welfare or entitlement programs.

Otherwise, programs are that set up to benefit "indigent" elderly will encourage people to become "indigent" so that they themselves will be able to benefit from them. This will end up creating ever-growing class of "indigent" people with an ever-growing need for services. This effect is 100% predictable, but Democrats aren't going to do anything to attack their cash cow and Republicans aren't willing to acknowledge their decades of cowardice, so neither party says anything.
