Circle of Life - My Goldfish Died
Posted on 11/05/2009 5:45:32 PM PST by JoeProBono
Over the years I've had many fish tanks.
More recently I had to "settle" for goldfish because of exigent circumstances.
Got a couple of "junk fish" from Wal-Mart and a used an old 30 gal tank.
These hearty goldfish thrived and lived literally through fire and ice storms.
I named them Franny and Zooey. They thrived and grew and "loved" each other.
On occasion they developed "Ick" - Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a single-celled parasite also known as Ich.
Treatment with medications always solved the infection.
A few days ago Ich raised it's ugly head and, despite "heroic" efforts short of CRP, Manny died.
Zooey (on the right) is in mourning.

I’ve had some goldfish for years and when one of them died recently the other one was clearly affected by it.

i hate ich
you have my sympathies / i’ve raised goldfish, too.

Count yourself lucky. Our Ick problem cost us about $300 in fish. We have a 150 gal Salt Water Reef aquarium. Copper will fight Ick, but Copper would wipe out the more expensive part of the tank, the live coral. After loosing several fish we had to quarantine all the fish in a sterile tank for weeks, while we did multiple water changes on the reef tank. It was a horrible experience, and many salt water aquarium hobbyist quite the hobby during their first Ick breakout.
Our’s is back and as beautiful as ever. Now we quarantine all new fish to make sure nothing enters.

You’re whining about a dead fish, and you didn’t do CPR?
You’re not the man I thought you were, Joe.
(then again, you didn’t say CPR you said CRP. If that has something to do with fish back-ends, I don’t wanna know about it — you get a pass.)

We won one of those cheap little goldfish at the fair. It lived for years, and years, during most of my children’s childhood and grew to enormous proportions. Sad for everyone when it passed.

Just...well.
Been there but can not spell plycos... csn not spell it now... the big black sucker fish that sucks algea???
My daughter had a huge one. One day it was missing. My step girl told me she heard a load splash in the night.
It committed suicide, jumped the tank and lid and dried up under the desk.
It was really sad.
Never let a splash go by you.

Buying goldfish and silverfish will NOT turn back the tide of inflation.
You should be in triggerfish.

“We have a 150 gal Salt Water Reef aquarium”
I envy you :-)! I’d love to be able to put something like this together but time always gets in the way. Someday :-)! I used to maintain a freshwater aquarium growing up and I miss that. After seeing some saltwater fish, I would LOVE to go that route, but I’d kill those poor fish within a week.

They are pretty fish, Joe.
Ick got my children’s gold fish after they had taken care of them for nearly three years. The youngest one really took it hard because he took great pride in taking good care of his fish and “teaching them tricks.” We had to have a funeral and bury Slick and Slime in the back yard with a little stick cross marking the grave.

Condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. I have several tanks. In fact, I used to be a retail marine tech at one time. We used to use the feeder goldfish to fill up the lion fish - we always placed bets to see what killed the goldfish first: the saltwater, or the predator. I once owned a tank and made the mistake of putting one of those dwarf carp in a tank with a dragon fish. I got up in the morning to feed the sushi bar, and lo and behold, the ol' fantail had its entire abdominal cavity hollowed out. I think a gourami or two were also culpable, in hindsight. Goldfish are hearty but filthy fish. In constant need of cleaning and care. Kinda like a geriatric at Seizure World.
