The problem is they see this ignorant bat eared freak and see us in the same light. No good can come from this.

What it really does is prove beyond a shadow of a doubt (destroying every phony excuse made for him) that he did indeed bow to the Saudi King.

Exactly, now it is SOP. Of course the WH is on record for saying it wasn't a bow. The web of lies continues...

Yes that us correct, shibumi.

The bow in Japan is not , contrary to Western conventional thought, a gesture of submission. According to Japanese tradition, the human body has three "zones" . Heaven ( from the shoulders up) Man (from Shoulders to hip)and Earth ( from the hips down.) When one bows in Japan, one offers the highest of the body in respect, the heaven aspect. Obama is indeed as you say, prostrating himself, and Akihito Samma, is not bowing even a little, either because he i s surprised, or because he does not respect Obama. The real key is the empress, who is not bowing even a little.

They do not respect Obama enough to bow even a little. This is done with feeling in Japan, and is spontaneous. It is a thing involving a type of perception very different to Westernern cultural ettiquette. A genuine bow can actually be felt in the heart. And Akihito knows this bow is all show.No heart. That is likely why he does not return Obama's bow, even a little.Nor does the Empress. Obama , intent on being the skillful inter cultural president, shows here that he knows nothing of Japanese culture. Before one bows there is a brief glance at the eyes of the person to whom one bows, a spark. This is what Obama is missing, or they both would be bowing back.

Secondly, Obama should have bowed before he shook hands, in the proper way, with his hands on his upper thigh, and he should not have bowed so deeply, because he is not a Japanese subject... a slow respectful bow of 45 to 50 degrees would have been required in his case, if Obama knew the correct protocol, which he obviously does not. So it is a false submissive bow of a man who has little honor in the way of Japanese thinking. A man who wants something. A man not to be trusted.

Obama did not fool the Imperial couple even one little bit, and they are strained to remain polite, humoring Obama as it were. Patronizing conduct gets one no where fast in Japan. Generally Japanese folks know a genuine bow from a false one by the way it feels, a form of perception which few Westerners experience, but still some do.

Obama has idiots for protocol officers, or alteratively, he did not listen to what they had to say about it.

Obama would have been much better off simply shaking hands, instead of this empty, false bow, completely off in its lack of genuiness. The bow of a snake.

I predict that Obama will make little progress with his diplomatic agenda in Japan, he will give much, and receive little in return.

This bonehead of a President we have is using a Japanese Emperor to make up for his allegience to Saud. What a maroon!

Quite right. The real message he just sent to the Japanese, who aren't oblivious to political gamesmanship, is that 0ba-Mao looks upon their Emperor as nothing more than a convenient stage prop for points in a domestic image issue.

Um, in a very real sense, he is apologizing for the nukes by that bow. Only a very low inferior bows like that.

He has shamed all of us with our best friends in the world.

Notice how both the Heisei Emperor and Michiko-sama are laughing at him (as are everyone else who has half a clue about Japanese culture).

This is the most humiliating picture I've ever seen of Obama.

Teach your son to respect other peoples space and he will do well. It’s a mutual thing. This bonehead of a President we have is using a Japanese Emperor to make up for his allegience to Saud. What a maroon!

I am doing just that, eyedigress. I couldn't be more pleased with how he is navigating the horrors of middle-school and being an honor roll student (mom brag). He studies WWII on his own because it is one of his main interests. We've been attending Veteran's Day and Memorial Day ceremonies since he's been able to walk. It hurts my heart sometimes that I have to help him navigate through these tough times when I think of how easy it seemed when I was growing up. I do have a perspective on history, but with 0bama, it just seems more sinister.

I’ve done business in Japan for several years and basically obama showed everyone in Japan what an ass he is. He may get away with it though, just because he’s obama and was not doing this in a mocking way. Nothing will likely be said publically because that would be rude.

Bowing that low in this kind of situation is considered almost an insult

Obama will make up for it later by giving the Emperor an iPod filled with Obama speeches.

Easy answer... to make it look like he bows to all heads of state, not just Muslim ones. This is a ruse to cover his past tracks...

Um, no. You do not bow like that in Japan unless it is to a clear superior. Do not. (Or you're drunk and departing on your separate ways before the Last Train).

Strangely enough, Obama is the one president that I'm sort of glad to see bowing to the Japanese Emperor.

It's a ridiculous posture for an American President to take. But it gives me just the slightest doubt about his bowing to the Saudi King.

I agree with you. Not only is it humiliating as you say, it is also degrading. In a country that values “face” or saving face so very highly, the Japanese must not only be somewhat surprised by Obama’s intentional loss of face, but also his naivete’,stupidity and immaturity. God help us.

Well you are right. This is actually worse than barfing on the Emperor's shoes.

Its a parody of a very deeply significant gesture in Japan. A mockery of Japanese culture, whether Obama intended that or not. Few Japanese have the privilege of bowing to the Emperor, and if this photo makes the news in Japan, it will be seen as a veiled insult, especially by the more conservative elements in Japan.

At this level of diplomacy, the game is played for keeps.

Obama has blown his whole visit.

Body language experts call this bow the “Overcompensation Bow”.

It’s best used after bowing to a Saudi King to make sure you now look like you bow to everbody.

Pros: Japanese leaders are much shorter and he might throw out his back.

Cons: He now has to bow to every leader in the world...and that suff is supposed to happen behind closed doors after long-winded Apologia.
