Judging by the results of these two searches, that I have just done on Google UK, it looks like we have serious f#$king problems here. Nearly 14 million searches asking if Barack Obama is Dick Cheney’s ... And other strange UK search results for Zero...

A fairly credible genealogy on BO and other political figures can be found here. Note that although his mother's line is well documented and does, indeed, make him distant cousins to Dick Cheney, information on his Daddy sperm donor's line fizzles out after just a few generations.

Bush is also related to Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Pierce, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, and Benedict Arnold. We can't choose our relatives.

I remember reading something by an Englishman who had taught Classics in Malawi. The textbook he was using showed an artist’s reconstruction of the huts lived in by the Romans in their “primitive” period. They looked pretty much the same as the huts the students lived in.

Don't feel bad. I'm a very distant cousin as well. The fact of the matter is that the pool of ancestors available in America before about 1670 was quite small. So if you have ancestors who were in America before 1670, chances are pretty good that you are distantly related.

Afterward, the odds drop because it was about this time the British Isles started sending people in substantial quantity who didn't want to come here. Not just slaves, but petty criminals, debtors and anyone else deemed surplus to the home islands and not worthy of hanging.

Once America became independent then Australia took over that role. The Aussies don't mind if you kid them about their ancestors being selected by the finest judges in England.

Sarah is a distant cousin of mine as well as we are both descended through the line which produced Nathan Hale, Revolutionary War hero. See the link in post #7 and the reasons explained in my previous post.

Every presidential election the British Press does articles about the genealogy of US candidates. One reason is that you usually can find a connection between “old stock” Americans and some English king or queen if you go back far enough. There was also an American publisher living in Britain who publicized his business by going to the press with stories about how candidates were related to each other and to other historical figures. Not only are Cheney and Obama eighth cousins, but Bush and Kerry were ninth cousins.
