When DVDs first began to contain those now ubiquitous special features, those mini documentaries, series of interviews, or behind the scenes shoots, it seemed like such an exciting idea, especially for film buffs (or series fans). But now that they have become fairly common and now that I've seen a lot of them, I have to say that they are almost entirely worthless for anything other than time-wasting, disc stuffers.
Did you know that JJ Abrams is a great camera shaker and is "the life" of the new Star Trek movie? Did you know that no one worked harder than Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy? Isn't the newest Punisher movie as fun as a real live comic book? Didn't the actors on Silverado have fun? Wasn't Patton intense? Aren't all these films as brilliant as Shakespeare?
Do you care at all?

As much as I enjoy the new Star Trek movie (watched it again, last night!), did you know that J.J. Abrams is a long time supporter of the Democratic Party and has donated $176,000 to the party since 1995?

Consider that every state and city that has been ran by the Democrats for years consistently has the highest crime rates, the lowest educational scores, the highest tax rates; and is now facing bankruptcy. Hello NYC, Louisiana, California, Washington DC, etc, etc.
Hollywood stars are wildly successful, having made more in a month than many families will earn over a lifetime. Their accumulated wealth means that their Grandchildren will never want for anything. So, they look at the poor and think "Golly, what can I do to help - that doesn't require a lot of time, energy or thought". The Democratic platform is all about 'Happy Feelings', 'Share a Coke' and 'Teach the World to Sing'; naivete' at it's finest. As long as you feel 'Good'; the program has to be good. Any program that may make you feel 'Bad' is inherently evil.
It's like 3 movies for the price of one. Without commentary, with commentary, and deleted scenes.
Most of the other dvds are just filler to justify using a dbl layer dvd.
Have you ever noticed how the Star Trek Universe is a Totalitarian society?
I got chills up and down my spine when I was sitting in the theater and the cop in the new Star Trek movie asks the young Kirk, “Citizen, what is your name?”
When I was younger, I fatuously thought that Star Trek was poking fun at Totalitarianism; now, I am convinced that this is Hollywood’s “ideal” future scenario...
Cheers
Well, Louisiana has had Republican governors for 10 of the past 14 years, California for 22 out of the past 26 years, and New York for 10 of the past 13 years, while New York City has had a Republican mayor for 15 of the past 17 years (Bloomberg has been an independent since 2007 or it would be 17 straight years). The GOP hasn’t exactly been an exemplary steward of the peoples’ money.

- Harrison Ford and James Garner have also been heavy Democrat donors, but I still enjoy their movies. I think one should dig a little deeper and find out *why* they are Democrats. Are they union supporters? Blue Dogs that they like? Gay Marriage? These things can spell the difference between someone who is utterly hopeless and irredeemable (Martin Sheen) and someone with a bit of leverage (Joe Lieberman )

- And how is that different than what we have? Cop asks for your driver’s license..has your name, date of birth, SS#, and incidentally pulls up any prior arrests, convictions, etc on the computer. Even if you were never convicted on a drug charge, it will still come up on the screen that you were involved in something illegal.
I hadn’t thought a lot about that, but this could explain why the Federation can’t do squat against the Borg while the Voyager (a rag tag bunch of misfits who can barely follow any set rule) gave it the cube kicking of their lives.
No, hadn't noticed that. But, you are correct, everyone has a place and answers to a central authority. Interesting post.
While I have to agree that the GOP has been woefully neglect in performing the most basic of it’s duties; the Govenor does not control funding. The Govenor finalizes and lead the state; but funding, taxes and programs fall under the Legislative branch.
The states I listed, have historically been Democratic in nature, voting more for Democratic principles than Republican principles. Detroit, LA, San Francisco, New Orleans and other such cities are now in financial ruin; yet these have the most generous Welfare programs, high taxes, high crimes, high populations of illegal aliens, crime and corruption.
However, states that have voted along Republican (ie. Conservative) ideals are doing much better. I offer Texas, Utah, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and others as evidence. Of all of these, I believe Texas is the best (of course, being a displaced Texan, I may be biased a wee bit).
LOL! How right you are!
Cheers
I believe Martin Sheen is pro-life even if he is a leftist dweeb on other issues.
Whatever Martin Sheen believes, he is one of the worst actors in Hollywood history. Sure Shatner is an over actor... but he knows it and has fun with it. Sheen is an over actor that thinks he actually GOOD!
The special features on the Lord of the Rings trilogy DVDs are very interesting and worth taking the time to watch.
Worst offender: Lord Of War. “Special features” feature data so wrong (ex.: AK47 fires 5.56 ammo) it must be deliberate.

If that’s the case, what compelled him to go to Iraq to visit our troops, have a free screening of Star Trek with the cast of the movie?
The original 60s “Star Trek” show was not a communist utopia, in fact it has a couple of unapologetically patriotic episodes. But in the 80s (The Next Generation) it became unwatchable for me. Endless naval gazing boredom where they bragged about how wonderfully egalitarian and advanced they were compared to us poor dumb 20th century dopes. Why, we don’t have money anymore, everyone just works for the common good and advancement of mankind. Snoooze fest.
>>>Have you ever noticed how the Star Trek Universe is a Totalitarian society?
Well the various series’ have all been focused on StarFLEET. With Admirals and Captains galore, you expect this will reflect a do-it-my-way philosophy. Very little time is spent with actual “contemporary” civilians in proper civilian settings.
If Earth is too organized for them, with all the new colonies they run around sprouting it’s my impression the average Federation citizens can freely and easily find somewhere to do pretty much as they please. As long as it doesn’t require getting dirty or sweaty or wrinkled, which seems to be the only real taboo.

A society with unlimited land available for the taking and replicators that can generate from atoms any material item you wish would naturally have either an incredibly complex economy, or no economy at all. Accordingly the writers chose to have both. They never could make their mind up on the economics of the Federation. Flint could buy himself a private planet, Quark could buy his own moon. Pressed Lantinum was legal tender everywhere. Then some career military hotshot says money means nothing. Well he can talk I guess.
