Health Care And Artificial Sweetners

More than ever, people are consuming large amounts of sugar as part of their daily diet according to the Mayo Clinic. But in excess, sugar can take its toll. Eating large amounts of sugar adds extra calories, which can cause weight gain. So many people opt for artificial sweeteners — also referred to as sugar substitutes or low-calorie sweeteners — as a way to enjoy their favorite foods without as many calories. According to eDocAmerica, Saccharin (Sweet 'N Low) was the first, and is perhaps the most controversial of the artificial sweeteners.

Be wary of artificial sweetners. When my daughter had a grand mal seizure, her neurologist said that she should avoid them because they can lower seizure thresholds. I also found out that they can trigger migraines and other headaches.

Since then, my family has avoided them. I figure it’s better just to limit real sugar.

You daughter’s experience sounds like what I’ve heard about Equal/Nutra Sweet. I gave it up when I got migraine headaches after drinking diet cokes.

I try to stay with Splenda — and there are some great alternatives with Stevia...

Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet) is another artificial sweetener according to eDocAmerica.

So, the author is not going to go out on a limb and claim on his own that Aspartame is an artificial sweetener?

Well, if eDocAmerica backs him up, I guess I have to believe him.

Some people I guess react badly, but I have used artificial sweeteners for years and years and never had any problems with headaches or anything else. Just don’t let the government decide if we can use them.

Me too -- the one and only time I ever got a migraine (hopefully never again), was when I switched to Diet Coke as I wanted to lose weight after the birth of my last child.

The pain was so intense and the only thing I did differently was drink Diet Coke ---- stopped immediately and have not had another migraine in 20 years .

Stopped drinking Diet Coke for almost a year now. Don't have those headaches anymore. Maybe it was the caffeine but it feels great. I still drink black coffee in the morning but don't need the Diet Coke fix at noon. Every once in a while I have a 12 oz on ice just because I can.

The much quoted "Science and the Public Interest" is nothing more than a very few liberals that fax out "health warnings" on such things as Coconut oil used to pop theater popcorn (remember how good it used to taste), got that banned, went after other "foods" as "harmful," etc.

I dare say, NO ONE in that group is none have never studied nutrition.

They merely jump on something that many people enjoy, fax out a flurry of "white papers" about "scientific studies proving......." and naturally the brain-dead MSM jump to quote them rather than investigating corruption at the highest levels, or Iran and their nukes, etc.

Junk Science is what they spout.

eDocAmerica also brings us this slice of wisdom...

According to eDocAmerica, Acesulfame-K (Sweet One, Sunette, and Sweet 'n Safe).

Far worse than sweeteners, I would say the current Socialist US Congress has created a far more devastating toll on our lives, our freedom, and the future of the United States of America.

We use diet rite drinks, many flavors and sweetened with splenda. Aspartane in diet drinks is a killer.

Can we get opinions from the Mustard and Ketchup clinics too? :)

I’ve moved to the philosophy that if you want low sugar, use half or eat half. If you want no sugar choose a food that naturally doesn’t have it. Same goes with fats.

I remember cyclamates. Used to drink the Diet-Rite sodas until they pulled them! No aftertaste.

I've read here, and elsewhere, that artificial, whatever can be bad for you from the standpoint of; the human race has been eating and processing natural foods forever, and the introduction of artificial substances, throw the body off. If the tongue tastes sweet the body expects sweet and preps to process it.

I don't know. All I know is I like the real things. Real sugar, real butter, real whatever. Eating too much of any one thing can be bad, so proper balance is required.

Just limit the real sugar.

I quit using sugar altogether about 10 years ago. I don’t even miss it any more, even the taste of anything sweet makes me nauseous. Hubby uses a very limited amount of Splenda.

Better think again. http://www.sweetpoison.com/phenylalanine.html

Wow, phenylalanine is a hidden danger. It is if you suffer from PKU but for everyone else it's just another amino acid - an essential amino acid that is the most common amino acid found in protein. Yeah, it must be really dangerous. Your doctor says it's dangerous because it's isolated in aspartame and not in a chain. Well, considering your gut breaks down chains of amino acids into their individual form before being absorbed and cleared by the liver, you have to wonder where this "Dr" studied nutrition, if she studied it at all.

Guess they put those warning labels on most artificial sweetener packages for nuttin?

Real is better, don’t care what it is.

They put warning labels on lots of things and most of them are absurd. This woman is trying to convince you that an essential amino acid (the building block of protein) and the most commonly found amino acid in protein, is dangerous to people not suffering from PKU (about 14,999 out of every 15,000 people).

Does this sound like someone who has any clue what she's talking about? That's just plain nutty.

I don't know her either but I notice she doesn't say where her "Doctorate" came from. Is it from the College of Naturopathy or is it from the University of Chicago?

She probably means well but she is very misguided.

Janet Hull has a very diverse professional background that gives her a greater appreciation of the connection between human health and the environment.

She has a Bachelors of Science in International Geography and Geology from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master’s of Environmental Science from Texas A&M, an OSHA SARA 120 HAZMAT certification, a license in nutrition from AHSU/NINE, and a Doctorate in Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health

Dr. Hull is certified in personal training, firefighting and emergency medical response, and is the single mother of three sons.

Do you consider 1 in 15,000 to be inconsequential. (they don't really know how it effects pregnant or lactating women and do not recommend it's consumption by children)

I seem to remember you saying you worked for a pharmaceutical company?

Sweet jeez, the Clayton College of Natural Health? Nice find. No wonder she doesn't go out of her way to advertise her credential, such as it is.

No need to go any further, she just another internet wannabe. Don't eat any protein. It's dangerous.

1 in 15,000 isn't inconsequential because PKU can be dangerous. That's why babies are tested for it right after they're born and most suffering from PKU can manage their condition and lead normal lives. Advising the remaining 14,999 people that don't suffer from PKU to avoid an essential amino acid because she thinks it can be dangerous is the height of absurdity.

No, I don't work in the pharmaceutical industry but I am very familiar with it in addition to being familiar with chemistry, nutrition and physiology.

I tried Diet Rite but it gave me instant migraines so it's a no-go. Some other sweeteners also give me other "unpleasant" side effects.

You're right about Aspartane being truly bad for everyone yet one sees "Equal" everywhere!
