Not only that, but they had hard plastic bullets. My brother shot me in the eye with a plastic bullet from a Secret Sam Secret Agent kit.

The eye and I both survived.

I was at the unfortunate age when the laws were changed that required all toy guns to have bright orange or red parts. I old had a couple of the cool looking toy guns of the past.

I also remember that we had cap guns that were made of real metal all the way through. The ones today just have a cheap aluminum cylinder and plastic the rest of the way through.

I used to have a capgun that was a snub nosed .38 revolver. The only plastic on it was the grips and the annoying red plug in the muzzle. The cylinder swung out like a real .38 revolver. I think it may still be in a box...somewhere.

I had the Mattel “ burp gun” in the 50’s . Made of METAL. Wound it up, put in a roll of caps , and it went full auto . Burned up the roll in about 10 seconds . Dad(Santa ) got me a whole carton box of caps to go with it . Can still smell the burnt powder . THOSE were the days .

Once again, an FR post sends me off on some wild Youtube tangent. Once you start watching, it's hard to stop. At least I made it back before half the night was gone. LOL!

Cool commercial. Just the kind of thing that gets liberal pacifists all 'weeweed up'. Gotta love it!

This was a quality cap gun. Ate up caps as fast as a real one would use .45 ACP. At a nickel a box, learned to conserve ammo. Made of plastic, but still lasted until it was run over by a car.

>> This was a quality cap gun.

I actually HAD one of those. Neighbor gave my brother and I one apiece. You’re right about the durability.

Man, those were the days. I remember Johnny 7 and Secret Sam. I lusted after them but it didn’t happen — no birthday, no Christmas, nuthin’. I remember trying to knock off something similar to the Secret Sam — a Mattel Shootin’ Shell firing gizmo I built inside an old briefcase-like box I made. As I recall it didn’t work so well.

On the other hand I don’t even remember the “secret date” game even though it was of the same era. Maybe that’s a good thing!

Burned up the roll in about 10 seconds.

... and pretty much nothing at all the rest of the year! :-)

Never went hungry though, and I always had a roof over my head and clothes to wear. My Dad and Mom were everyday heroes, but I bet they never fully appreciated it. God bless ‘em.
