Recommendations for a double-barreled, side-by-side, 12 gauge shotgun (vanity)

Posted on 01/01/2010 6:56:17 AM PST by bjorn14

I am thinking about getting a double-barreled, side-by-side shotgun 12 gauge shotgun for personal protection. Any recommendations? The government where I live would never approve of a handgun for "personal protection". I also may on occasion us it for bird hunting.

I have a remington 12 semi-auto and she holds 5 rounds with the plug out. Get an extra barrel and saw off to 20 inches for home defense, and switch to original 26 to 28 inch for hunting
game. Double barrel not good defense weapon imho.

Bought my son a Rem 870 tactical pump for Christmas. Awesome gun. I agree this is the best platform for home defense. Of note, he fooled around at our skeet range with it and hit about 95%.

12 gauge shotgun for personal protection.

If indeed personal protection is your purpose, consider a 20 gauge. Buy one that holds the maximum number of shells and has the shortest legal barrel length. After purchasing new or used and if you are handy, reduce the stock to a comfortable size closely resembling a long barreled pistol. However, use both hands and fire it from your hip for self defense. For a more professional appearance, pay a gun smith to do it to your specifications.

Keep it loaded and handy. This will be more than adequate for personal protection and only do minimal damage to walls, doors, and home fixtures with the added benefit of not harming neighbors.

Get a used 12 guage Browning Auto-5 and you have five shots!

Get a new SA Saiga 12 for $450.

They usually come with a 5rnd mag but you can buy 8 and 12 rnd mag's. You can even get a 20rnd drum mag for it.

Some serious zombie stopping power!

Mossberg 500 9 shot Someone broke into my car last night. Fortunately for them my motion detector light scared them off. I have got a Mossberg Home Defender with a super powerful LED flashlight bolted to the front of it. the one pictured holds 8 shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber for a total of 9.

My recommendation?

Dont limit yourself to 2 shells for self defense.

My personal like is a stage coach type double barrel with rabbit ear hammers. Any long gun is going to be tactically difficult to swing around in closed quarters, so short barrels are fine, you won't be shooting anything more than a few yards away. I like the rabbit ears as a positive visual that you are ready to go. At night you can also feel them in the dark well. Also if you come up against an intruder the visual of those two 12 gauge barrels and the sound of you clicking back those rabbit ears will do the trick. Why shoot if you don't have too. The sound of a pump action is also a scary thing. Question is to leave loaded or not. If not where are my shells? Get a stock holster that keeps the shells with the gun, unless you have kids (or a cajun spouse) around. SASS has some gunsmiths that will set up double barrels with slightly oversize receivers so you van load fast but gunsmithing isn't cheap. Whatever you buy, you’ll only be as good as you practice. But then, it's hard to miss with shotgun. I wouldn’t load up with double OO or slugs. You do not want to shoot through walls. 03 is my choice. Maybe one, the first barrel smaller shot than that. A load of squirrel shot will knock a person down but they have a good chance of surviving, if it just ticks ‘em off, the second barrel will end it. I have never had to actually shoot someone, but I have used the intimidation factor to ask them to leave. You do not want to clean up after a gun battle. Especially after a shotgun wound. Be safe!

Mossberg 500 pump. Cheap, higher capacity, and can find lots of add-ons for it at reasonable prices. I would at least recommend the heat shield for the barrel, and maybe a folding pistol-grip stock.

I have that 590 but with a speed feed stock and a side saddle I put on it. It’s a great 12 gauge.

Get a pump, cheaper, more capacity, and at a realistic price range, more reliable.

Plus, you can reloaded it without breaking open the weapon.

Plus, it makes the most intimidating sound known to man when you chamber a round.

Under the National Firearms Act (NFA) it is illegal for a private citizen to possess a sawed-off modern smokeless powder shotgun (a barrel length less than 18 in. or 46 cm and an overall length less than 26 inches) without a tax-stamped permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which requires a background check and a $200.00 fee for every transfer. However, if the weapon was manufactured by a licensed builder, with a short barrel and no stock, the transfer fee is $5. [1] (Short-barreled muzzleloading blackpowder shotguns, in contrast, are not illegal by federal law and require no tax-stamped permit, although they may be illegal under state law.) As with all NFA regulated firearms, a new tax stamp must be purchased before every transfer. Inter-state transfers must be facilitated through a Class III Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer while intrastate transfers may be between two persons.[6]

Perhaps if your let go of your ignorance based fears of people less fortunate than yourself or of a different race than yourself you would not attract the type of negative energy where you feel the need to protect yourself. sarcasm/ I think I just made myself throw up in my mouth.

If you should stumble across a used Stevens model 311 snap it up. Absolute best value for the money; you will fall in love with it. Have a gunsmith check it out for you. You might try some of the auction sites.
