The shooting of a twelve year old boy by police has precipitated a Arkansas law banning the sale of realistic looking toy guns.

He was shot by police after they say that he pointed a gun at them which turned out to be a toy gun.

The boy’s mother says that the toy gun was “planted” on the child, and he was actually holding a bottle of soda when he was shot. She fought against the law being named after her son. The gun “found” by police had.....

How did we make it through the 60s without the cops shooting kids dead in the streets?

That's alright. Real guns work better and every child over the age of 5 should be taught how to respect, care for and USE firearms. Weapons are NOT toys and should not be treated as such in my opinion. More children are shot and killed by real guns being mistaken for toys that I can count. I've seen it with my own eyes and the only people to blame are the irresponsible parents that did not take the time to teach their children the most basic rules of firearm safety. You don't pull a gun unless you plan on using it. Never assume a gun is unloaded. And guns are not toys. They are tools designed to be used to kill whatever it is shooting at. This crap that they are meant only for hunting or target practice accomplishes nothing more than to desensitize people, especially children, to just how dangerous guns can be. The same argument about desensitization can be made about the video games that condition children that play them into thinking guns are toys and life's a game.

Would any responsible parent let their child play with a table saw without first educating them on how to use it and about the dangers involved should the one using it not be paying attention? NO! Guns should be no different.

I think Arkansas legislators are a bunch of dumb*** putz's and I'm sure they have better things to do than to be going after which toys they think should and should not be played with but I can't snivel too much about this law. Police don't have time to stop and check to see if a gun being pointed at them is a toy or not. And a 12 year old can look much older in a lot of cases. Law enforcement officers have a duty to protect themselves first in my opinion.

Another thing before I end my rant. What the heck were the police doing at this child's home in the first place and more to the point, why were their guns drawn?

OK! I'm finished.

I spent my middle school, and my tenth grade year in Arkansas, and back then it was not unusual for students to carry their shotguns to school for going hunting when school let out. The bigger problem was students bringing their hounds.

When I was a kid growing up in Texas I had every kind of toy gun imaginable. I watched reruns of all the 50’s and 60’s westerns and cop shows and wanted toys that looked like what they had. A snub nose that reminded me of Mannix, a gold derringer like the one Palidin hid in his belt buckle, a toy colt 45, a muzzle loading rifle like Daniel Boone, etc. Then there was the BB gun that was a replica of a Winchester (got my finger caught in that one) and later on a more powerful BB gun and pellet gun. Then my father took a couple of antique pistols from the 1800’s and took the firing pin out and made me a holster. I played with those real toys openly and on the street. Even took them to school for show and tell. No one at the school thought anything about it. Local department stores had BB gun turkey shoots for the kids in the stores. No adult every bugged me for walking around on the street. I also had a pocket knife collection and a Bowie knife my father made for me. I was a happy little girl!!! Now they’d arrest all of us. But my parents always had real guns and taughht me to use them safely. They also taught me never to point a toy gun at an adult, especially at a police officer. And they very bluntly explained what could happen if I did. Does anyone these days tell their kids not to point the guns at cops? Parents used to not shy away from teaching about unintended consequences.

“How did we make it through the 60s without the cops shooting kids dead in the streets?”

In the 60’s the “kids” (thugs, gangbangers, etc.) weren’t regularly pulling real guns on the cops.

When my late father was a kid in the 30’s and 40’s he was an avid hunter. He used to hunt possums and rabbits and sell them at his parents grocery store for extra spending money.
He said he and his friends walked around the woods of east Texas with rifles slung over the shoulders.Sometimes on foot, sometimes he would ride his parents’s horses or mules to go hunting. When he was smaller he’d ride a donkey his parents gave him.

Are modern cops really scared of toy guns, or are they just more trigger-happy?

According to the Chief’s testimony, the gun was a replica of the .40 Glocks his officers carried.

Ahh, for the days when we could walk barefoot in the street with a pointed stick run up through the gills of a pile of fish.

Life was simpler then.

They’re more trigger happy especially if you own a dog.

Another stupid worthless law.

Indeed. Worthless without its counterpart...a law banning the sale of toy-looking real guns.
