Every Tuesday I go to Murphy's Taproom in Manchester to hang out with a bunch of liberty-oriented people. This is a famous event among Free-staters.

Paultard?

You don’t tip? Ever?

I’d ban you also.

And you continued to pay by credit card? Pay cash in questionable places.

I pay cash and I tip well. The servers, mail or female, know me and my family and give extra good service.

New ones who don’t give good service get a very small tip. The regulars must clue them in because the next time we get good service - and they get a good tip.

People who don’t tip, when they receive adequate service, are jerks. This guy should spend some time waiting tables. Wait staff get paid a token salary, and are expected to work harder in order to make more money. It’s capitalism in the raw, and non-tippers reap the reward without contributing the price, of this work. And they will certainly go to Hell.

Well, they shouldn’t threaten you...but you should tip, especially in a bar. I wouldn’t go back, personally, because I think that having tips extorted (especially by the owner!) is totally wrong.

Write him a letter and tell him this.

However, as a former waitron, I can tell you that you’re not doing yourself or your group any favors. I never liked waiting on women, because they never tipped, regardless of how much you had done for them; there was another group that also never tipped, but I won’t go there...

The man is correct: tipping is just a way for restaraunt owners and some other businessmen to underpay their staff, advertise prices that are artificially low(because the real costs of staff are not included),and it is a practice that would be unthinkable in MOST fields of work.

How many expect to tip the mechanic who gets $15 an hour of the $60 per hour the dealer charges for his services?Do you tip the clerk at the local convenience store?

But guess what?the convenience store clerk is paid $8.50 to $10 per hour which is what wait staff should get at least.

Wouldn't it be more fair to just charge the customer another dollar for that steak, another dime for that drink, those fies, etc. and just pay the help ?

The writer’s waitress/waiter is taxed on an estimated 10-20% of her/his checks whether she/he receives it, or not.

>>I’d ban you also.<<

Me too.
We tip 20% for good service and 10% if a server does the minimum. Rarely does that happen. I’m glad to give 20% to the server that fills my coffee cup before I ask and are patient with my kids as they learn to order for themselves.

And we tip with cash so it doesn’t hit the tax roles.

Servers are some of the hardest working and friendly people I know. This patron is a cheapskate.

I’d have thrown his ass out, too. Tipping is part of the expense of a full-service restaurant. Though it is not legally required, and can be withheld or reduced for poor service, it is customary to offer a gratuity for good service.

Sounds like the writer is an obnoxious ass.

OK...I won't comment on how I think this guy's a moron...oops, just did.

Anyhow, let's follow his line of thinking out. $3.00/hr is not sufficient to earn a living on. Thus the staff has the choice of finding another job. At some point though, the owner will not be able to find new staff without paying them more. He will then pass that increase along to his customers through higher prices. At that point, this clown will be paying the equivalent of the tip but he will now not have the power to express his pleasure/displeasure with the quality of the service. Addtionally, what motivation will there be to provide excellent service everytime?

Actually, no it wouldn’t. The personalization of a tip amount allows the customer to pay the amount the service deserved. It is a method of controlling the quality of service by ensuring that the income of the service staff is at the behest of the customer. If the price was figured into the cost, it would be the same regardless of the quality of service, and service quality would like go down.

2. "if I tip the waiters, why don't I tip the cook or the owner?,"

Most wait staff pool the tips and share with the bus boys and cooks.

Of course if we crank their wages up then they lose a reason for good service. I’m a generous tipper, in places I frequent I get great service, they’ve even brought new staff to me to introduce them and tell them my preferences (favorite beer, usual time of arrival, etc). Tipping is not only a chance to reward or punish behavior by the staff, it’s also a chance to establish a relationship and be rewarded later.

But it does hit the tax roles. They have to pay an estimated tip tax on their receipts. The IRS takes it whether they receive it, or not.

Reminds me of my years in high school. We'd have a party and the scroungers would show up wanting free beer.

We weren't above icing down some “USED” beer and letting them have that.

Some scroungers never new the differerence.

Fair? What’s fair got to do with business? You speak like a child. An extra dollar for a steak, or an extra dime for fries would not cover the salary differential that tips do, and it would make your waiter as highly motivated as the fast-food dude at the drive-through window. Your idea would ruin incentive, decrease the income of waiters, and promote anti-capitalism.

People who don’t tip or are stingy tippers bug me. I understand the frustration of his receipt being changed (unless, being with a group an automatic gratuity is added and he didn’t report that). However, his decision not to tip was made before that happened. Don’t go out if you don’t plan or can’t afford to tip, period. You are paying for service as well as food. I’m sure he has a lot of perfectly logical (in his mind) arguments for why he doesn’t tip, but the point of fact, he is cheap.

I try to always tip 30% + to make up for all the cheap bastards like this guy.
