Type Of Pistol

Posted on 01/11/2010 8:43:57 PM PST by Rose Commander

Hi, everybody. I got a question. I am in the market for a new pistol. I was recommended a Hi-Point .45 ACP pistol for a home defense weapon. I am curious as what do you all recommend. Please state a pistol that is at least a .40 or larger and it is $400 or less.

Thank you.

Or make them bleed until they get woozy in the head and need a transfusion.

Word! Brother!

I love my Kimber II even after I trashed it in my little experiment.

Way to easy to work with.

Consider purchasing a Stoeger Cougar model 8040. It really is a Beretta Cougar renamed. EXCELLENT handgun. Eleven .40 rounds in the clip.

I’ve got two Kimber 1911’s... a full size 5” Custom that freaking drives nails, and an ultra-compact Kimber RCP (Refined Carry Pistol) that I carry on me pretty much all the time.

In my opinion there has been no improvement on John Moses Browning’s design in a very long time. Even a hundred years later there still isn’t a better design for an auto pistol.

Good enough for me. :-)

I have been lusting after the Beretta and I do need a .40 as my others are 22, 38, 45 and 357.

That is a sweet gun. You like it?

The Taurus Judge loaded with .410 buckshot (Federal makes a cartridge made just for this handgun) is an excellent choice in the $400 range. It is a revolver which means you set it and forget it. It shoots a shot shell so spread is rapid which is good in a home situation. And it has a surprisingly gentle kick.

As always this is a poisoned question. Glock lovers and 1911 lovers will all crawl out of the woodwork screaming from the mountaintops that there’s is best. People will present rediculous torture tests like running over the gun with a steam roller after casing it in concrete while throwing it from a helicopter. Well that’s bunk because it’s a home defense pistol you’re after. You won’t be shooting 10s of thousands of rounds during trench warfare. I’m judging you are a noob to handguns so in my experience I recommend a revolver. The Judge has the best of both worlds between a revolver and a shotgun.

HOEVER! The BEST pistol for home self defense is the pistol you have loaded, within reach, when you need it, and one you are exquisitely familiar with.

To everyone else remember Rose Commander asked what PISTOL. Not rifle.

I love my TAURUS PT-145 MILLENIUM PRO .45 ACP at $343.

I paired it with a leather pocket holster and carry it in the front pocket of my pants.

Beautiful tools. I love em. worth every penny.

I love opening up my case at the range and watching the other guys check out my Kimmy, as I call her.

Way to many guys come up after watching me shoot and say that is one accurate gun.

I always tell them this my gun jewelry but it isn’t the gun.

The shooter makes the difference, just to make em’ feel worse. A little guy humor. LOL

Kimber needs a moniker:

When only the best will do-

send a message using a Kimber.

Whatever you buy, practice with it until you are, as G. Gordon Liddy likes to say, “Sudden.”

I wouldn't use a Hi-Point as a paperweight. Much less as a tool for self defense.

You can get a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum w/4”-6” barrell used or even new from $400 - $450. The gun is a tank and shoots a variety of 38 Special, +P, +P+ and .357 Magnum ammunition. The .357 Magnum catridge is well documented as the best one stop shot round in the 95% range (1,100 -1,600 fps MV, 500 - 800 ft/lb ME).

Used Sig P226 would be my suggestion but pick whatever feels right in your hand. Try not to just buy based on money because $400 should buy you a used Baretta, Glock, Sig, Springfield XD, S&W M&P. Any of those should serve you well and IMO are built/engineered better than a Hi-Point....YMMV
