Lets just say they were not kidding about the blood part
As a passionate student of history I have always been interested in the story and life of the rebel slave, Spartacus. A man who shook Rome to the core yet a man we know fairly little about. Yet a legend has grown around his motives and actions and history has remembered him while forgetting countless others. Last night Starz debuted (to mixed reviews) an original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand which I made time to watch. It is produced by Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi who, a decade ago, gave to us Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess.

I wonder if it was filmed in New Zealand, like Hercules and Xena was? Anybody know?
Saw this. I take it someone related to 300 is involved in this one. It is entertaining.
The jury is out? Exactly what has to happen before it's declared, oh I don't know... how about DEPRAVED?
I tried to watch it but it was too juvenile for me. Found something much better on TCM last night GUNS OF NAVARONE and WHERE EAGLES DARE.
It seems like 300 on a budget.
The first episode was just good enough to get me to watch episode 2.
I think there were two bare breasted love scenes and one orgy scene in the almost one hour episode.
More “300 splattered blood sword/lance “ scenes than sex scenes.
“300” was the worst! What an opportunity squandered to tell an epic story.
“Gates of Fire- An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae” by Stephen Pressfield is an exciting read.
The Brits have some historians that write like novelists. I think their best one is Dr Tom Holland (Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic).
Two other wonderful British writers of history are Adrian Goldsworthy, and Sir Martin Gilbert. If you enjoy this subject, try one of these- they DO NOT write boring accounts!
I believe the reason kids hate studying history is that their teachers have no talent as STORYTELLERS. Relating historical narrative can be EXCITING if you make the effort.
Historical depravity?
Realism?
Oh No!
Now I will actually regret not being able to view it.
This show is nothing but soft porn and I’m using soft generously. Sex and violence on mainstream TV...I am not a prude..this one is over the top. we are a dying civilization.
